Score = 7, the wings look a like they have some grease on them. Also look a little dark and over cooked.

Comments: They look dry. Sauce/glaze are not even.

7. Looks overdone, thus unappealing.

Score 8. Chicken is very dark and appears overcooked.

5; 8 pieces = legal entry. Color is extremely dark.

Suggestions: lighten color...some judges will call it burnt & score accordingly. Please use less sauce...to me, this looks like a box of (I won't tell what my initial thought was) sauce with chicken attached.

SCORE/REASONS: 8 pieces in the front look excellent. Back pieces look smaller and not natural.

SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS: 8 maybe 8.5

8...Wings look good. Nice color and size.

To move up to a 9 the sauce needs to be evenly applied.

Thanks for something different. However the kickstand on the right side pieces are very disturbing and unsightly !!
Color is great and looks like it might have really good flavor. Sauce is a little hit and miss in coverage.
Very good, here's your 8.

7. Appears to have too much cooked on sauce/rub and the sauce is splotchy. Love a good wing!

8 Finally someone brave enough to submit something other than thighs. I would give it a 9 but these hummers might be over done.

cbj/comp cook, 8 a couple pieces look kinda burnt around the edges, it's nice to see something other than thighs tho.

Score/Reason 6 having a hard time telling what this is, looks a little dark, over sauced, maybe a little different arrangement would help.

7 With reservations. It's unique contents and presentation make it one of those you would like to try for taste and tenderness before making a judgment call on looks alone.

There is not 6 pieces in the box even if that is chicken - which it does not look like

Michael

My first thought is what meat is THAT!
My second thought is that they look overdone!
Looks slightly burnt because of darkness of the coloring and I see what looks like some burnt spots.
The sauce is spotty making the chicken look dry.

I would probably give it a 5.

I am not saying it has to have sauce all over it, but uniformity is what is needed, either all over or not at all. This appearance could be how the was picture taken.

9, great color and presentation...makes me want some of that

8 possibly 9 in person. First, the person that did the garnish is an artist. Maybe the best use of garnish I've seen. But while the color of the chicken is awesome the sauce is a bit uneven. While not a consideration in judging, props for doing something besides thighs.

My first thought is what is that!
It looks over cooked.
I know it is not a sauce contest but, if you sauce the sauce needs to coat the meat evenly. Because it is not the meat looks dry.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
