I would ask the table captain to request a contest rep review the box. Should be DQ'd for illegal garnish.

1 KCBS garnish rules

Bill

If I look past the illegal garnish, and just at the chicken itself, I would give it a 7 and maybe an 8 with better lighting of the meat. yes it's not uniform in exact shapes and matching colors but it looks OK as BBQ Chicken goes.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
5/14/2013 11:37:59 pm

7, possibly 8 in person. Chicken looks dry.

If this was a KCBS contest the carrots would disqualify this box. A wee bit more sauce would spruce up this box.

Russ Hazzon
5/15/2013 12:22:38 am

7 - skin color is uneven, skin looks like it has bits of something in the sauce, placement of chicken a little sloppy.

Nobody said whether or not we follow KCBS rules here. If yes, then unapproved garnish (carrots) in container.

Mike Cannon
5/15/2013 12:31:33 am

6 - color inconsistent. Shape seems artificial. Don't like the carrots in the box. Could be trying to identify their box to judges.

8 needs a little more char/color on the skin. skin "looks" rubbery.

Score/Reasons = 1, Illegal Garnish
If this is an Open Garnish Competition, I would have gone with a 6. The Chicken just looks OK.

Score/Reasons = 1, DISQUALIFIED due to the box containing a foreign object - carrots! Of course, WE (CBJs) CANNOT DQ an entry, we can just ask the TC to check with the REP to DQ an entry. (Otherwise = 7, looks decent, but the photo is so dark it loses some appetizing appeal for me. A better photo or in person would probably gain a point. Potentially looks dry.)

Suggestions/Comments = Remove the carrots! Lighten up the photo, spritz or sauce the thighs to make them appear moist, the pieces could be paired up better to match the sizes/look a bit better -(if you put all of them on a board and match them up before putting them in the box it would help the appearance.)

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/15/2013 01:30:31 am

Score/Reasons = 6 before the DQ to a 1 for the lovely carrot strips. The gloppy sauce and light color of the chicken do not add to the appeal of this chicken.
Suggestions/Comments = Tighten up the presentation of the garnish.

Larry MCBJ

DQ - Illegal garnish.

Bill F.
5/15/2013 02:36:15 am

7 (Possible DQ, what are carrots doing in there?) Ignoring the garnish, the thighs have an odd pale color, just not appetizing. More effort with trimming would also help.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

7....Pale skin. Looks very dry. Uneven rows. Box lacks appeal.

Suggestions: Carrots means not KCBS. Use a little more sauce or darker sauce.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
5/15/2013 02:59:32 am

If KCBS, it's a DQ for foreign object. If carrot garnish is allowed then chicken color is nice. Happy that it's not all gloppy with sauce. They kinda remind me of baked potatoes. Sizes are all over the place.
This offering to me is average so 6 from me.

Roger CBJ / FBA
5/15/2013 03:24:16 am

Would do a 7 sauced very unevenly and the arrangement looks lazy. Suggestion: sauce more evenly and work on arrangement a little more carefully.

Chaz D
5/15/2013 03:57:09 am

Score: 7 I honestly thought these were baked potatoes at first glance. The color is way off and they are extremely tucked under making them look pretty unnatural. And of course the carrots technically make the box illegal.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
5/15/2013 03:59:45 am

Score = 1 for KCBS, this is a DQ with in proper garnish. The chicken looks good though, if not a DQ, I would give it a 7 or an 8.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
5/15/2013 04:22:48 am

Score/Reasons: If this is a KCBS contest box, it's a DQ for illegal garnish. Score = 1. Ignoring the illegal garnish, I'd score it 6, maybe 7 in person. Meat looks dry & unappealing.

Suggestions/Comments: A light spritz would help brighten up the appearance.

Keith - CBJ/CTC
5/15/2013 05:14:53 am

Score/Reasons = 7 -- Uneven arrangement of meat that looks as if it has been pasted with some odd sauce. I will not deduct for the green tint as I am guessing this is a function of the dark image. Also -- not a DQ b/c I'm assuming this is not a KCBS box.

Suggestions/Comments = Given the thought that was paid to garnish I'd recommend giving at least as much to the meat. And often times with sauce, less is more. Go and, honestly, for higher scores you'll want to aim for the middle of the road.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score / Reasons = 9 overall the box looks good. The thighs could be lined up better both horizontally and vertically. The meat looks good. I did not take into consideration the KCBS illegal garnish in the carrots because this may be OK in other organizations.

Suggestions / Comments = If this box is to be submitted under KCBS rules, it would be DQ'ed because of the carrot sticks which are not permitted. Be careful on the garnish so you don't get DQ'ed Everything else looks goodl

score = 1, illegal garnish (carrots)
comments = this looks more like stuffed cabbage rolls than BBQ chicken thighs and skin appears dry and blistered.

Hate to throw the rulebook in my first ever comment on this site, but I'm calling the contest rep over if I get this one at my table.

Rule 12) Garnish is optional. If used, it is limited to chopped,
sliced, shredded or whole leaves of fresh green lettuce, curly
parsley, flat leaf parsley and/or cilantro. Kale, endive, red
tipped lettuce, lettuce cores and other vegetation are
prohibited. Improper garnish shall receive a score of one (1)
on Appearance.

Good looking box except for the carrot sticks.

Noel Smith

The chicken looks pretty good; however, the carrots will get you disqualified in KCBS. It can be considered illegal garnish/marking your box.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
5/16/2013 05:57:58 am

Score/Reasons: 1- DQ- Due to illegal garnish in the box (carrot shreds)

Suggestion/Comments: This is really too bad because the chicken looks really good and if not for the illegal garnish, would have scored very high. A real shame.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and comp cook
5/16/2013 06:48:56 am

Score/Reason: I would give this box an 8, however, there is what looks to be carrots in the corners of the box that would be considered a foreign object so it would be a 2.
Suggestion: Chicken could be trimmed a little neater.

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ

Score/Reasons = 7, It looks too much like processed meat. Also there appears to be ingredients that are longer in length then 1/8"; which would be a KCBS disqualification, as would the carrots. If at an event that allows different garnishes, and ingredient size doesn't matter, my score is 7.

Suggestions/Comments = Carrots don't add much for the appearance.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
5/16/2013 11:06:31 am

Score D/Q. I hope this team did not submit this box for judging at a KCBS contest, Carrots are not allowed in the box. Overlooking the D/Q I still would only give this entry a 6. On first viewing I though it was a box of potatoes. There is no appeal to this "chicken". Too formed, too dark and just not an appetizing look to this box. I can only imagine the response the people would have if this was brought to a table in a restaurant. Suggestion is simple. Let your chicken look like chicken!

Donna B
5/16/2013 04:25:56 pm

Score/Reasons = 6. Would be a DQ if KCBS because of carrots. Meat is unidentifiable. Looks like pumped up sausage. Not appealing.

Lorne Rae
5/17/2013 01:18:01 pm

DQ- carrot garnish is not allowed in the PNWBA. Otherwise the chicken is uniform in size, color and in spacing and looks moist.

Score-7
Maybe 8 in person. Pic quality not very good. Sauce looks even but also dry.
(concern to DQ based on illegal garnish-carrots)

Score/Reasons = 6. Looks bad, under cooked. looks like sausage. Bad color. I do not the carrot slices in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = use more sauce.

Mike - KCBS, UTBBQO Certified Judge, Comp Cook

Score / Reason - 6 or 1. This may be a DQ for an illegal garnish in box. If not illegal at your comp, then a 6. I like the looks of the skin, it looks crispy and appetizing with a nice color. The sizes are mismatched and are of different shapes. The shape itself is off-putting to me and reminds me of baked potatoes. The pieces are not centered in the box.

Comments / Suggestions - I would try and even out the sizes of the chicken and be very careful in how they were placed in the box. If I were to use a garnish, I would make sure it was even around the edges and does not distract from great looks of the meat.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/ reason, i would give this box a 1 or (DQ) for illegal garnish in the corner it appears to be carrots other wise i would have gave it an 8

GeorgeB
5/21/2013 06:52:05 am

Score/Reason = 6, unidentifiable rolls. Perhaps if one was cut to show the contents it may make it more appealing.
Suggestions/Comments = If they are boneless, cut one open to show the meat inside. If they are bone-in thighs, make them look like thighs.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
