9 - Looks great. Nice even glaze but not oversauced. Pieces fill box.
Bill KCBS CBJ / MBN

9 The middle piece appears to have a thicker section of sauce that could be lighting. But if not, in person might drop to an 8.
6/3/2013 12:16:05 am
9. Nice arrangement and chicken looks moist and has good color.
6/3/2013 12:22:10 am
8 - nice looking chicken. good color

8 - I like that the thighs look natural and not manipulated to look like something else. A little pale. Would like a bit more color.
6/3/2013 01:20:10 am
6/3/2013 01:32:03 am
7 - I'm guilty of placing the larger, nicer looking ones up front, but these are just too out of proportion.

Score/Reasons = 8, may be higher in person. Appear moist. Sauce may be a little heavy, but this may be the picture and the accumulation where the thighs are up against one another.
6/3/2013 01:37:11 am
Score 7 - Nothing really outstanding visually to make this special
Kendall - CBJ

Score/Reasons = 9, excellent. Color, moisture, symmetry all make for a delicious box of meat.
6/3/2013 02:20:20 am
Score 9. Nice box, but I waivered between an 8 and the 9, finally giving the higher score to the cook. Reasons: I would like to see the chicken slightly darker in color and with any more sauce it would be an 8. Suggestion: please do not put a lot of sauce on the chicken. This entry appears to have enough sauce to even run down between the pieces.

Score: 9 No complaints here. Good color and not oversauced.

8 looks pretty good but absent any evidence of bbq (grill marks, char) looks like they have been roasted in an oven. too perfect for grilling!

Shapes and sizes are varying a little too much. Not a fan of the really light color. You have sauce pooling between pieces.
6/3/2013 05:08:22 am
8 - Very nice, simple presentation that showcases the meat without distracting. 9 if the chicken had more color not attributed to sauce
Pete - KCBS
6/3/2013 05:48:40 am
7 - Nicely arranged in the box, meat looks juicy but not much variation of color in the skin, kind of an artificial look. Herbs or pepper visible on the skin are a plus. The orange-ish color is kind of interesting (in a good way), could be the photography.

I give it a 9, looks pretty tasty to me..

Score/Reasons = 8, nice color, not too much sauce; looks very appetizing without any detractors. If all thighs were sized the same, it would have been a clear 9, but the disparity of the sizes was immediately visible.

8 - nice looking chicken, nicely and uniformly trimmed, but not muffin tin bird.
6/3/2013 11:48:45 am
8. The green in the bottom of the box enhances the contrast of the chicken pieces. Perhaps some more green along the sides would make the box slightly more attractive. Pieces are fairly uniform in size and have an even glaze sheen which is very appealing and appetizing. A nice turn-in box.
6/3/2013 12:09:26 pm
9. Nice layout, even spacing, even sizing, good even color. Look moist.

Score/ Reason = 8, Overall, the meat looks good. It appears the sauce is not even over all ,meat. Some pieces seem to have more sauce than others.
6/4/2013 04:18:51 am
Score/Reason = 7, it doesn't look BBQ'd and the skin looks undercooked, like it could be rubbery. I think I'm being generous with a 7.

8-9, Very nice large pieces. Could they be too large? Good color.

8 - Nice color, they look moist and are well arranged. Sauced about right, but the back row might be a tad smaller OR it may be the photo angle. Good lookin box!

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice looking Chicken with good color. Suggestions/Comments = More focus on the uniformity of the size (I know, it's easier typed than done most of the time) would have gotten a higher score.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
