7 - Pieces not well trimmed. Sauced uneven.

Ike/CBJ/KCBS
6/3/2013 12:17:59 am

8. Chicken is a little uneven in size and sauce is gloppy on the two pieces on the bottom left....otherwise could have been a 9.

9 - very nice color . . . couldn't wait to take a bit out of this entry

9 - beautiful!

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
6/3/2013 01:12:38 am

Score/Reasons: 9
Suggestions: Very nicely constructed box. Good to see chicken that truly looks like chicken.

Greg MCBJ/KCBS

score=8
tasty looking but a little rough in appearance

Frank KCS MCBJ CTC
6/3/2013 01:35:44 am

Score/Reasons = 8, may be higher in person. Nice looking chicken.

Suggestions/Comments = Even up the sizes a little more.

Bob

Score 7 - Good box, but not great

Kendall - CBJ
6/3/2013 01:42:29 am

Maybe it's just the pic but the sauce looks a little unevenly applied. I'd give it an 8, but it may be a 9 in person.

8 sizing a bit off, looks like to much sauce on a couple pieces

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
6/3/2013 02:19:55 am

Score = 8, Size, color, shape are uneven. Just makes the box look a little sloppy.

Scott - KCBS CBJ
6/3/2013 02:25:15 am

Score/Reasons = 7, above average. Nice color. Skin a bit uneven on some of the pieces.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
6/3/2013 02:35:58 am

Score 9. Reason: very simply this is nice chicken with great color, even pieces, and a nice glaze on the sauce.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
6/3/2013 02:38:55 am

Score/Reasons = 8, This is an example of differing sizes and shapes being a bit too much.

Suggestions/Comments = The color is really good but it looks like they may have set a bit long and the sauce started drying out. Take a bit more time to clean up your trimming and you'll do well.

Shawn- KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 9. Great color and looks moist and juicy.

Suggestion: I have no suggestion. This looks great!

7 Uneven trimming / cutting but I like the color, good tasted potential here.

8 pieces don't look uniform in size and appearance. yep, that's pretty picky but we are talking excellent vs. very good!

Ed KCBS MCBJ
6/3/2013 03:56:59 am

Back two pieces are visually larger than the other 4. Color and texture are excellent, I want to bite one of the front four.
I see a very good 8.

Ricardo

7 - Nice color but sauce looks "gloppy" . Back left piece looks dry.

Pete - KCBS
6/3/2013 05:18:10 am

9 - this is an appealing and mouth-watering box of chicken. Looks like actual pieces of chicken, not overly manipulated or oddly shaped.

Jean Krieske
6/3/2013 05:51:47 am

I give those an 8, only because the sauce doesn't appear even to me, but could be the photo.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
6/3/2013 06:17:50 am

Score/Reasons = 8, great color but the sauce appears a little gloppy and the thighs are of various sizes and shapes. It's a minor detractor but this is a competitve analysis.

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook
6/3/2013 06:44:52 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks pretty good, but maybe a wee bit dry (especially the back left thigh). Could be trimmed better and sauce could be spread more evenly, but still looks very appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = match up sizes and shapes before putting in box so they look closer to those on each side.

Lorne Rae

7. Nice layout, good even color, look moist. They are not similar in shape and give the box a jumbled appearance.

Eggspert, KCBS CBJ
6/3/2013 12:29:07 pm

Score: 7-8
Comments: Keep working on sizing and shape.

Jeff CBJ KCBS
6/3/2013 01:56:51 pm

score/reason 8 color looks good, sauce looks uneven, and chicken could be more uniform in size

jaja01 KCBS CMBJ CTC
6/3/2013 11:57:38 pm

Score/Reasons = ,7, the red color gives the chicken, to me, an unappetizing look. Also, the skin on the left front piece looks at if it came off and was replaced. It is not very good looking. Also, the chicken looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest not having the chicken look so red and dry. Maybe a little, very little, sauce can be added as a glaze. This would give the meat the appearance of being more moist.

GeorgeB
6/4/2013 04:23:30 am

Score/Reason = 8, looks pretty good. I'm stuck between 7 and 8 so I went with 8. Nice color.

Suggestions/Comments = make the garnish a little more balanced. Looks like a nice coating of sauce, not too thick.

Tom, CBJ PNWBA
6/4/2013 04:29:41 am

8, Nice color and glaze. Need more uniformity.

Larry MCBJ
6/4/2013 05:06:53 am

7 - No wow factor and they need trimming.

Don
6/4/2013 04:11:47 pm

8 - uniform presentation, product looks dry (could be quality of photo)

6......Unappealing box. Not trimmed to size. Looks under cooked.

Do a better job with the sauce. It looks dry. Spitz before closing the lid.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC
6/5/2013 06:43:59 am

Score/Reasons: 8. Meat should be trimmed better.

Dwain
6/5/2013 12:12:22 pm

Score = 9

Greg - CBJ/KCBS
6/6/2013 04:28:44 am

7 - Samples not evenly sized, trimmed or evenly browned (or cooked?).

Glenn - KCBS CBJ, CTC
6/8/2013 06:53:41 am

7 - The chicken itself looks like it could be tasty but the pieces look a little "rough". Not very pretty.

Jim S. KBCS CBJ NEBS
6/10/2013 01:00:27 am

Score/Reasons = 8, A good solid chicken box. Color a bit uneven, but good.
Suggestions/Comments = A bit of pre-cook shaping would make a world of difference.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
