8 - Looks like it could be oversauced. Might be the picture. If not, then I'd give it a 9.

Kev B / KCBS CBJ
6/3/2013 12:18:51 am

Score: 9

Suggestion: Very nice box. The only thing that I suggest you do is to even up your garnish along the sides. I think if you did that it would give even more of a WOW factor.

9. Even sized pieces, nice arrangement and not too much sauce (getting close to too much though).

Good job!

8 - very nice, a little less sauce and you have a sure 9

Mike Cannon
6/3/2013 01:14:12 am

8 - nice but boring - nothing to tell me that it wasn't baked in an oven.

classy looking box, should get you some money.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
6/3/2013 01:33:13 am

Score/Reasons: 8; This would be a 9 if the chicken hadn't been so slathered in sauce.
Suggestions/Comments:
The cook did such an otherwise great job, it's a shame that the choice was made to hide the chicken under the thick layer of sauce.

Old Goat

8 - Too much sauce.

Judging on it's own hurt this one. If it had been a comparison event, I would have given it first place overt over other entrants today.

Frank KCBS CBJ CTC
6/3/2013 01:41:25 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice box.

Suggestions/Comments = None

Bob
6/3/2013 01:43:15 am

Score 7 - A box has to stand out from the other entries to get a 9. This entry shows that the team has taken care in the presentation, but all most all teams do that. Sauce is fine, but I'm not judging the sauce and more sauce doesn't make up for the meat over or under cooked and spiced.

Kendall - CBJ

Looks great! I'd give it a 9!

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

8 sizing and trim good, borderline on to much sauce lower right piece looks scorched

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9

Comments = Only very minor things I can spot with this box. Size and shape are very, very slightly uneven.

Scott - KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 9, excellent. Gorgeous!

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
6/3/2013 02:29:38 am

Score 8. Reasons: There appears to be some great chicken hiding under the heavy coating of sauce, but so much sauce has been put on this entry it has run down between the pieces and does not allow the chicken to be properly presented. Suggestion: lighten up on the amount of sauce and I believe you will improve your scores.

Shawn- KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
6/3/2013 02:51:11 am

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 9. Color, uniformity, and overall presentation looks excellent!

Suggestion: Try to use a little less sauce.

8 what are the weird white specs on the piece in the lower right and above? not much evidence of bbq process (char, grill marks) looks oven roasted.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
6/3/2013 03:50:36 am

Nice even sized pieces, nice full box, color is pretty good.
Can't see anything that would keep me from an excellent 9.

Sugg: When there is a puddle of sauce between pieces it makes me think "too saucy".

Tom, CBJ PNWBA

8, Good uniformity, Could have held back on so much glaze.

8 - simple yet attractive box, nice looking chicken thta looks like it got some smoke instaed of jiust cooking in pan

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
6/3/2013 05:17:35 am

Score/Reasons: 9 Beautiful color.

Suggestions/Comments: Maybe the sauce could be a tad more even but thats being very picky. Its a gorgeous box and I wouldn't change much if anything.

7- Looks good, nicely arranged, color is very uniform due to what appears to be quite a bit of sauce, maybe a bit too much. Hard to keep the scorecard clean after sampling that one

Score/Reasons = 9, great color, size, appears well prepared!

6/3/2013 06:54:38 am

Score/Reasons = 9, NOT perfect, but looks dadgum appetizing to me! Looks almost over-sauced, but not enough to ding a point.

Suggestions/Comments = lighten up on the sauce thickness (looks like Karo syrup).

Bobby Whigefield

9. Very good appearance of the turn-in box. Glaze is uniform and pieces are visually appealing. While there is some uneveness of the skin, theuniformity of the glaze tends to overshadow it. Pieces are well presented, appear tender, and well cooked.

8. Good even color, nice spacing and a good layout. Look moist. The middle left thigh is smaller than the remainder.

Score/Reasons = 9, the chicken looks good.

Score/Reasons = maybe use a little less glaze. The meat look over glazed a bit.

Score/Reason = 7, they almost look fake. At first glance, the gave me the impression of something sweet and candied.

Suggestions/Comments = Size of thighs seem nice. Clean traditional arrangement. Perhaps if the sauce was cooked on a bit more it would be more appealing.

Careful with over saucing.

9
An easy nine. While not perfect, this is certainly excellent looking.

Comment: A fine example of the superb chicken routinely presented to us lucky judges by skilled KCBS pitmasters

Dan - CBJ/KCBS
6/7/2013 04:50:54 am

Score = 9. Nice looking chicken. Good color, uniform sized pieces, and just the right amount of sauce. Although the middle/left piece might be the exception, my first impression was that the skin was cooked well with no chewy/fatty bites.

Glenn CBJ, CTC

8 - A little over sauced but the box looks very good.

Jim S. KCBS CBJ NEBS

Score/Reasons = 8, Beautiful Color! Very natural looking.

Suggestions/Comments =Skin Coverage is uneven on a few of the pieces. Tough to control yes, but it kept from getting the 9.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
