I would give an 8. Sauce looks a bit gloopy on some of the chicken
6/27/2013 12:24:26 pm
8 Too much sauce, otherwise perfect.

Score - 9 Very nice box, good mahogany color, all thighs appear to be identical in size and orientation.
6/27/2013 12:48:49 pm
7 way too much sauce, plus the sauce is uneven
6/27/2013 01:17:07 pm
an 8. Good layout, even color and size, look moist. Lower right sauce has run spoiling an otherwise nice box.

8 nice box, nice color except for glob on lower rh thigh
6/27/2013 02:00:04 pm
Great color and nice presentation. Score =8.
6/27/2013 02:01:08 pm
An excellent box, in fact, one of the best I have seen. Pieces are uniform in size, shape, and color. The glaze is spread evenly and is quiteattractive. An easy 9, quite possibly a 10. Would like to taste this one

Score/Reasons: 9 - beautiful box of nicely trimmed thighs. Nice color says "dive in." And, I'd be glad to oblige.

Score/Reasons = 8; I'm not a fan of "shiny" BBQ, only because seeing a reflection of myself doesn't tell me much about the meat.

score/reason 7 maybe 8 in person little over sauced, coudl be a little more uniform size, and straighter in the box.
6/27/2013 04:21:19 pm
9 - nice color, uniformed placed product, sauce a bit globby. Like the fact that the meat product was not over shadowed by the garnish.

8 - nice color, look plump and moist but sauce is gloppy. Garnish is nice but could be more uniform under meat, just a bit distracting.

Score 7 - Pretty saucy, shape looks more like baked potatoes than a piece of chicken but it's got an appealing color and looking at it makes me really hungry.
6/27/2013 06:06:59 pm
8 - a little artificial looking.
6/27/2013 09:57:19 pm
9 - Looks great.
6/27/2013 10:11:36 pm
Score 7. Reason: It appears there might be some great chicken in this box, but due to the heavy coating of sauce I can not really see the chicken for doneness or color.

Score/Reason: 8 The pieces and color are good but the sauce is really uneven and clumpy looking.
6/27/2013 11:59:45 pm
Looks very, very good. Possibly a little heavy on the sauce on some pieces.

Score/Reason: I would score this box an 8. Chicken looks moist and glaze looks nice.
6/28/2013 12:28:45 am
Score/Reasons = 8, looks ok. Meat looks a little crammed in box, sauce uneven and too heavy in spots, one piece looks darker than the rest.

Looks great! Maybe could be a little better on the sauce application, but I'd still give it a 9.
6/28/2013 03:24:16 am
Scored this an 8 - very neat appearance with the garnish (just enough) and uniformity with the pieces of meat, but uneven application of sauce. Couple of pieces had alot more than the others.

Score = 8, Sauce and color is uneven on some of the pieces.
6/28/2013 03:03:14 pm
8 - The thighs are large and look to be well cooked and moist. However, the sauce is heavy and uneven, especially the piece in the lower right.
6/28/2013 03:22:56 pm
8,the sauce looks kinda uneven and splotchy in places, other than that they look pretty nice.

Score/Reasons = 7, the red color, to me, does not cause me to want to taste the meat. Also, the sauce is not applied evenly as can be seen on the sides of the meat.

8 - Very good - very good color, chicken looks good enough to eat!

Score/Reasons = 8. Nice color. Would be a 9 without the heavy sauce. A thin glaze is all you need.
7/1/2013 02:38:33 am
8 Sauce a little unevenly applied
7/2/2013 06:33:38 am
Score = 9. This is a good, sharp photo which makes a big difference online. This is a very appealing box. Looks like the skin will be very tender with no globs of fat. The color of the chicken against the parsley is striking and I think it would look even better if green was visible all around the edges. The box is a tiny bit crowded too. Judging on the meat alone, as we should be, this is good stuff.
Scott - KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, above average box. Chicken pieces are even sized and have a nice color. Some pieces look a bit dry and unevenly sauced.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
