Score = 8

Good looking box. Pieces are uniform in shape and size. That said, the box looks a little wet. The pieces look moist but the garnish is wet as well. That may be a case where the finish was trying to make the pieces look moist by spritzing the pieces in the box. Tough to tell but a decent entry.

7 looks good but the sauce coverage is very uneven and the thighs are not spaced and placed very well. To me it looks like too low of heat, skin not rendered very well, kinda rubbery looking. Keep practicing. Good luck

7,sauce is kinda uneven and if their gonna trim their pieces they should be more even in size. Personally I prefer a more natural looking thigh myself.

Score this box a 9. Even sized pieces with just the right amount of sauce. Good job!

Score/Reasons = 6 Size, shape and color are inconsistant. The skin looks undercooked and potentially rubbery, more so on bottom left piece. Sauce application and/or final spritz splashed onto sides of box.

Nice color on the meat. Possibly use a little more parsley to prevent staining on the Styrofoam tray.

Score 8. I want to taste these. But the square shapes turn me off.

9/20/2013 01:19:30 am

Score/Reasons = 7. piece are not uniform in size. Skin does not look crispy. Too many black specks in sauce. Good color on sauce

Suggestions/Comments =make the skin crispy and allow the sauce to setup longer

Frank KCBS CBJ CTC
9/20/2013 02:34:08 am

Score/Reasons =7, possibly 8 in person. Too much variation in color, some pieces had more char than others, saucing need a bit more care.

Suggestions/Comments = Keep the sauce off of the garnish and the box as much as possible.

Clean, neat, great color. Not too much parsley but enough to make the box attractive. Give it an 8.

score - 8 - color on the skin is very uneven and not consistent. Sauce appears a bit uneven

a 6, Look moist, nice color, good arrangement but some pieces are rectangular and others square. Glaze looks blotchy.

Score/Reasons = 7, looks a bit strange with square/flat thighs, coloration and sauce not even.

Suggestions/Comments = Fix the above.

Score/Reasons = 8, and I was swaying between 7 & 8. Looking at the sides, some pieces look under cooked. I don't like the square shape of the pieces, though didn't factor that into my score..

Suggestions/Comments:
Get rid of the square shape. Though the space between the rows allow the judges to see more of the chicken, I would decrease that space a little, which will still give the judges a good view of that side of the chicken, and make the box more symmetrical.

8 - meat looks great, nice color, uneven saucing

/dev/bbq KCBS Judge & Cook

7 - looks moist, but not feeling any anticipation due to the specs and variation of color and possible burnt end of top center piece.

The garnish and sauce marks are a bit distracting, would suggest a little more care and clean up prior to turn-in.

John in RVA - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 7 - Average looking, maybe slightly better. Blotchy sauce, sauce very uneven from one piece to another; exposed skin at the edges of several pieces appear to be flabby and un-crispy If that's a word).

Suggestions/Recommendations: Crisp-up the edges, apply sauce evenly, pay attention to the details.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
9/20/2013 06:43:12 pm

Score = 8, color, sauce and size are a little uneven.

Comments: Trimming the thighs to have a more uniform size and making sure the sauce coats the chicken evenly should get you 9's every time.

Larry MCBJ
9/21/2013 11:26:36 am

7 - Uneven, gloppy sauce...even the greens are sauced. All the thigh bones in the box are presented vertical however, the lower right thigh's bone goes left to right.

9. Good Color and Looks moist according to the picture.

Comments. Although I did give it a 9 the color is uneven and the unnatural shape is off putting. Look at the color around the edges... that needs to be more uniform. And I have sat with judges who I know would judge lower because of the unnatural square shape, and I think they might be right. So although I gave it a 9 and probably would on a contest day (I am sometimes a bit too forgiving of appearance).

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 7 Sauce look very uneven and slightly burnt, Bottom Right piece should be turned 1/4 so all bones are facing the same direction, and pieces could be a little more uniform in size.

7 - Even though the product looks good, the lack of organization and neatness detracts from what could be a higher score.

Jim Michnowicz KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/22/2013 11:23:55 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 - The meat, with the carmelazation looks good. The thing that rated this down from a 9, is the lack of uniformity of the pieces. The upper center piece just look too rectangular compared to the others.

Suggestions/Comments = I would suggest the shape of the meat be kept natural. But, try to keep the pieces about the same size. Don't over trim

6, Messy box.

Take a little more time to clean up the box, and arrangement of the meat.

I would give this box an 8. Chicken looks cooked and sauced great!

Suggestion: Trim the chicken more evenly

Chaz D CBJ
9/23/2013 08:13:12 am

Score: 7 The uneven finish is a bit unappealing and the box just seems out of proportion.

Comment: I purposely didn't count off for the box being a bit sloppy looking (might have been handled badly) but the meat pieces really need to be a bit more even in finish.

9/23/2013 11:35:14 am

Score 8. This entry would score a nine if the meat, sauce and color was more even through out.

7....Blotchy color and sauce. Looks under cooked. Different size pieces.

Tighten up the arrangement. Move the rows closer together.

8 - Solid chicken box. Size and trimming look nice. Sauce is consistent, the color is a little uneven, but it may be just the photo. Nice job.

Score: 8. The meat looks very appetizing but in the picture it looks like just a little too much sauce. It also looks like the sauce got onto the box and garnish.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
