8 possible 9 in person, looks good to me.

7 very empty looking and lonely box. Good sauce coverage looks nice and even but a little over sauced. Remember judges wanna taste the chicken first

Ike, KCBS CBJ

7, possibly an 8 in person. Pieces are too dark and the sauce looks gooey and over-applied.

DJ Martin KCBS CBJ
9/19/2013 11:57:46 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 Color looks good. Sauce application looks good. Size and shape of pieces look reasonably consistant. Can't see all of each piece.

Suggestions/Comments = Be careful not to cover the meat with your garnish.

Meat pieces seem a little larger near the front of the box, but that may be the photo angle. Also, meat seems just a little darker in color than I prefer.

9. Can't wait to taste these. They look a little dark, but I think that is the quality of the photo.

Score/Reasons = 8. Good color, uniform sizes. Garnish looks off.
Suggestions/Comments = Trim thighs better. Cut off excess. Use only one type of garnish. separate pieces more (back two pieces are too close)

Shawn Higgins
9/20/2013 01:49:31 am

Score = 9

A real good looking box. The pieces are uniform in size and the color looks great. The pieces appear to be moist. I would love to try the pieces to see if they taste as good as they look.

Frank KCBS CBJ CTC
9/20/2013 02:40:50 am

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice looking box. May be higher in person. Color seemed a little dark and mottled in spots.

Suggestions/Comments = The spacing could be a liitle better, but not much else.

Wrong box displyed. Should be 194 this picture is 193

Bobby Whitefield

Uniform pieces with excellent color finish. Neat box and the two types of garnish enhance the presentation. Definitely deserves a 9.

score - 8 - color too dark and size a bit inconsistent

Lorne Rae

a 7. Even color, nice arrangement, look moist but lower right piece is larger than the others.

a 7. Same reasons as the previous example, even color, nice arrangement look moist but lower right piece is much larger.

9/20/2013 04:22:34 am

Score/Reasons = 9, definitely NOT perfect, but still looks dad-gum appetizing to me.

Suggestions/Comments = Photo rather dark, don't hide the meat under ANY garnish.

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ
9/20/2013 06:42:37 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Very nice looking box. The top piece on the left the sauce was not applied as evenly as the other pieces

9 - nice color, uniform pieces, looks delicious

/dev/bbq KCBS Judge and Cook
9/20/2013 09:29:56 am

8 - looks moist, consistent sizing and arrangement, color is nice in that regard, but does make wonder if slightly overdone.

Bit lost in the garnish - maybe place more garnish underneath to raise the meat up.

John in RVA - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
9/20/2013 01:43:43 pm

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice looking chicken, but it's "buried" in the garnish.

Suggestions/Comments: Lift the meat by placing a "spacer" beneath it...such as a disc of iceberg or a layer of chopped/pulled chicken.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
9/20/2013 06:44:19 pm

Score = 8, Hard to get a good look at the meat in this photo because it is sitting down in the box. But from what I can see it looks good.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Uneven placement, spotty sauce, and the garnish partially covers the meat.

Matt KCBS CBJ
9/22/2013 12:29:14 am

Score/Reasons = 8, great color, almost uniform in shape, good looking box

Suggestions/Comments = none

8 nice looking, but less greens

9/22/2013 08:18:07 am

Score/Reasons: 9. Beautiful.

Moonpie

9. That is a color that particularly attracts me in BBQ. And I see it glistening so it looks moist.

Comment: It really could sit up more above the garnish instead of nested in it. And the use of two different types of greens throws me a bit. I wouldn't take off for that, but another judge might. That parsley seemed haphazard in the rest of the greenery. And if a judge was REALLY picky the piece close to the hinge to the viewers left has uneven saucing. But for me... I'd still give a 9, but the nit picking might get you less than all 9s.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 8 sauce looks a little uneven and thick, could be more uniform in sizes

Heavy splotched sauce-maybe hiding hard skin

JohnnyY/CBJ,KCBS,NCBS,NCPC

8 - The pieces are not evenly sauced; more attention to detail would have helped to receive a higher score.

Jim Michnowicz KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/22/2013 11:29:44 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 - the meat is not uniform in size and is not lined up . The lower right thigh has a bone sticking out which takes away from the appearance of the box.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest putting in uniform sizes of pieces and maybe turn the lower right thigh around so the bone is toward the inside and not so visible.

8 Nice arrangement, nice color, natural looking thighs.

9/23/2013 06:50:10 am

I would score this box a 7. Chicken is very dark in color and pieces vary in size.

Suggestion: Try to get more uniform pieces to turn in.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
9/23/2013 08:19:47 am

Score: 8 The meat looks pretty good but maybe a bit dark in color. Some slight differences in shape/size as well but not too bad.

Comment: The dark appearance could easily be the pic but I judged what is presented. Also, while I purposely didn't count off be careful to not over-garnish.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. Excellent looking chicken which has not been painted with sauce. Good Job!

9....Good color. Good size. Nice even sauce.

Over Garnished

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Nice box. Meat appears moist and sauced evenly. A slight bit of the garnish is blocking the view of the edge of a couple of pieces and am unable to determine how well they are trimmed.

Steve R. - KCBS CBJ
9/24/2013 12:50:23 pm

Scored this an 8. The meat looks great but a touch too much sauce for my liking. (Only a comment: The garnish is distracting to me because there's so much of it. Less would have been much better.)

8 or 9, tough to tell

It looks like chicken I'd want to eat. Careful, the garnish is starting to cover the chicken, and hiding an entry isn't good...

kenneth

a tad dark I mean barley . and to much garnish . it overwhelmed the chicken. 7

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
