Score = 7

The garnish swallows up the pieces which makes it difficult to judge the appearance. The color is nice but inconsistent across the pieces. The pieces look moist but due to the garnish, I'm unable to determine if the pieces are uniform in size and shape.

box 194
score 8 meat looks moist but seems buried by the garnish so not really able to consistently see the chicken pieces

Rod Lively

6, I cant see enough of it to really give it anything more...need to work on having the pieces sit more on top of the garnish instead of down in it.

5 where is the chicken? Make the box look full of meat, not full of well... Something IMO that's not supposed to be in there anyways.

George

7 - Way too much garnish. We are to judge the meat and not the garnish. The garnish hides the meat.

7 at best. Appearance score would be higher if you could see the chicken. Gid rid of some of the garnish. What I can see of the chicken looks pretty good.

Score/Reasons = 6 Color on skin looks very light which generally indicates it will be rubbery. Sauce application is uneven. Pieces are hidden so conformity in size can't be determined.

7 garnish shading meat, dark spots unappealing

7. Way too much garnish. What is being hidden?

bruce nickels
9/20/2013 01:25:48 am

Score/Reasons = 6. too much garnish. Chicken is hidden.skin looks rubbery. sauce is a good color, but not applying evenly.
Suggestions/Comments = these pieces will be hard for the judges to remove from the box. Put down garnish first then set up chicken on top of garnish.Try to make skin crisper.

Frank KCBS CBJ CTC
9/20/2013 02:49:31 am

This is for box #194, listed as #195

Score/Reasons = 6, Difficult to judge as the meat is hidden by the garnish. Color is not even enough, sauce looks pretty uneven as well. Work on presentation, meat should be the star.

Suggestions/Comments = none

David - CBJ/KCBS
9/20/2013 03:14:40 am

Score - 8 - inconsistent color and garnish is hiding the pieces.

Comments...I might have gone a 7 because of the garnish and the color, but if possible I always score up when not sure.

Bobby Whitefield
9/20/2013 03:18:42 am

Excessive garnish overwhelms the turn-in box. Finishing glaze is not uniform and cannot determine whether pieces are uniform or not. It may taste great but presentation is poor. A 6 at best.

Lorne Rae
9/20/2013 03:37:31 am

a 6. Nice color, good arrangement, look moist but unable to judge if sizes are uniform and if placement is uniform.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
9/20/2013 04:17:59 am

Score/Reasons = 6, we are to judge the appearance of the meat only, but when you can't hardly see the meat as it is burried in the garnish, it makes judging difficult. From what I can see, sizes/shapes are unknown, coloration and sauce not even, black stuff is NOT appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = have your meat sit on top of the garnish not burried down into it! Fix the coloration and sauce and get rid of the black stuff.

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ
9/20/2013 06:47:04 am

Score/Reasons = 6; but very close to a 5. Sauce seems to be haphazardly applied, and it does not look appealing. Too much garnish. That much garnish makes me feel that the cook is trying to hide problems.

Suggestions/Comments:
Cut back on the garnish, and allow the judges to judge the meat. Pay more attention to how you apply the sauce.

Lorrie / KCBS CBJ
9/20/2013 07:24:27 am

7 - meat hard to see through garnish, therefore difficult to judge, sauce seems to be "clumpy" in spots, very uneven

/dev/bbq KCBS Judge and Cook
9/20/2013 09:33:48 am

8 - looks moist, great color, specs are a distraction and don't give good anticipation regarding taste.

Really buried in the garnish - which maybe was intentional to mask some uneven sizing?

John in RVA - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
9/20/2013 01:48:37 pm

Score/Reasons: 7, maybe 8; The chicken looks good, but it's "buried" so deeply in the garnish that it practically disappears. If a team uses garnish, the product should sit "ON" the garnish so it can be seen (unless, of course, the team is hiding something).

Suggestions/Comments: Put a "spacer" under the chicken to lift it from the "weeds."

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
9/20/2013 06:45:29 pm

Score = 7: I can't hardly see the meat in this photo.

Comment: If judges can't get a good look at the meat, then they won't be able to judge it properly.

Larry MCBJ
9/21/2013 11:37:31 am

6 - Parsley covers the meat, gloppy, uneven sauce, looks undercooked, and those black "boogers" aren't appetizing.

Matt KCBS CBJ
9/22/2013 12:44:06 am

Score/Reasons = 6, looks under cooked, color is light and uneven

Suggestions/Comments = Overkill on the parsley, obviously. Spread sauce more evenly and spend some time trimming that chicken to uniform shape and size.

7 can't see the meat, less greens

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

8 and maybe even 7. The uneven sauce and not so great color but especially being buried in the green.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
9/22/2013 01:23:56 pm

score/reason 6 To much greenery looks like your trying to hide what you cooked. Sauce in spots are a bit dark looking like it's burnt, then some spots are so thin like there is no sauce and then others are heavily sauce whole box is uneven.

8 Sauced too heavily and unevenly

Not judging the garnish, but looks a mite heavy.

9/22/2013 06:58:26 pm

6 - appearance is just that, the judges must be able to see the entry. The garnish is covering the pieces blocking the view.

Jim Michnbowicz KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/22/2013 11:36:46 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, There is so much garnish in the box that it is hiding most of the meat. As judges, we are to judge the meat and not garnish. From what is visible,, the thighs are not sauced evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest putting less garnish in the box or place it so it does not cover up the meat. Garnish should showcase the meat and make the box look good and not hide the meat. Also, take care when saucing the meat and make sure the sauce is evenly applied.

6, Too much garnish, can't see enough of the meat to actually tell.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp cook
9/23/2013 06:52:08 am

I would score this box an 8. The chicken looks cooked very well.

Suggestion: Try not to hide your entry. I would like to see more each piece of meat.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
9/23/2013 08:23:46 am

Score: 7 The meat is very unevenly finished and light in color. Cant really see the size/shape.

Comment: You REALLY need to cut back on the garnish. This looks like a box of salad with a chicken garnish instead of the other way around. I normally ignore garnish altogether until it causes an issue with seeing the meat as it does here.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
9/23/2013 11:17:37 am

Score 8. I feel that a score of eight on this box is being generous. The reason is the chicken is buried in the parsley and being able to properly see and score it is very difficult. The cook needs to elevate his entry and allow the judges to see the entire meat if he is proud of it.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COOK

6....Pale color. Meat looks under cooked. Uneven sauce Unable to judge size because of the garnish.

Way to much garnish.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

7 - Above average box. Meat appears moist but sauced unevenly. Garnish is blocking the view of the edges of most of pieces and am unable to determine how well, or IF they are trimmed.

Steve R. - KCBS CBJ
9/24/2013 12:54:21 pm

Can only give this one a 7. What I can see of the chicken, the sauce was not evenly applied. I am not scoring on the garnish, but it is certainly hiding alot of the entry.

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6, Really tough to evaluate for appearance

Suggestions/Comments = In the words of the beloved Clara Peller... "Where's the Chicken?" Please don't hide that beautiful chicken.

6?

I'm recalling the old Wendy's commercial with Clara Peller: Where's the Beef? Seriously, where's the meat. We're not to judge garnish, but it's masking most of the meat. What I can see looks blotchy and perhaps a burned spot or two...

Tough to make heads or tales of this one.

A good judge wants a good effort. and I don't see that in this box! 5

Dave Compton - KCBS MCBJ
10/13/2013 12:09:37 pm

From what little I can see of the actual chicken, it looks like the sauce is gloppy and the coloring is uneven. Maybe I would score higher if I could SEE the meat instead of it being covered up by the garnish, Since all that I see is garnish and all that I'm going to judge is the MEAT - I'll give this a 7.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
