Score = 6

The pieces are a little dark in color and appear to have a little too much glaze. It's a very plain looking box.

score 8 some more burnt looking than others
comments glad to see some with no garnish wish done more often to be better at judging the meat and not how its enhanced by the garnish

Score/Reasons = 7 Size and color are inconsistant. Looks like some burning on a couple of them. Sauce looks glopped on and splattered on box.

Score/Reasons =8. good color overall. piece on bottom right is larger than the rest and it looks a little burnt on bottom. good sauce level it almost too thick but gives a good shine. I want to eat this chicken!!
Suggestions/Comments = garnish would make it look more appealing. Cover up extra sauce on box. arrangement of box could be better, but meat looks great.

Score/Reasons = 5, not quite "average" in my opinion. Too dissimilar in size, shape, coloration, saucing, etc. Just isn't a really appetizing looking box.

Suggestions/Comments = Fix the above findings.

7 sizing a little off and edges appear burnt o a couple pieces

Mike S.; KCBS MCBJ &,BBQ-Brethren RJ
9/20/2013 06:52:22 am

Score/Reasons = 7. May have been an 8 or a 9, but the photo is too dark, which makes the chicken look dark and over cooked. For me it is definitely over sauced.

Suggestions/Comments:
If you are not going to use garnish, pay more attention on how you arrange the pieces.

Ike, KCBS CBJ
9/20/2013 06:52:53 am

Score this a 6. Pieces are not close to being uniform in size and there's too much sauce.

Suggestion: even though garnish is not required it would sure make your box more presentable.

8 - nice color, nice uniform pieces, looks delicious, a little saucy, as you can see on the sides of the box

7- sauce is a bit thick looking, color on a couple a bit dark/burnt looking.

score - 7...some of the chicken looks a bit burned and the sauce/glaze is extremely heavy

5. Even color look moist. nice layout but pieces are of differing size and four of them are touching each other.

John in RVA - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 5, maybe 6; Is this entry from a first-time competition team? No two pieces are the same size, they're erratically placed in the box, the pieces are over-sauced.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix the "reasons." Ask a KCBS Contest Rep to show you some pix of other turn-in boxes to help get an idea of what a good/better turn-in box can look like. Then, practice, practice, practice.

Score = 7, The color is nice, but a little uneven. The sauce and size of the thighs are also uneven. Some of the pieces look burnt at the edges as well.

Comment: Interesting box without the garnish. Trim the thighs to have more uniform look and you will score better. The two thighs on either end of the bottom row just look out of place. Also it looks like the skin on some of the pieces has pulled up which doesn't look good.

7, maybe even down to a 6. I am distracted by the smears of sauce and grease in the box. The lack of uniformity in size and shape also.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Over sauced, uneven placement, uneven sizing.

Matt KCBS CBJ
9/22/2013 12:51:33 am

Score/Reasons = 8, meat looks good, generously sized pieces, nice red/mahogany color, bottom looks a bit charred on two pieces

Suggestions/Comments = great shine on the glaze/sauce, make sure to take extra time when trimming - the devil is in the details!

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 8. Over-sauced.

Moonpie

8. Sauce is heavy handed and looks like some charring.

Comment: I didn't take off for no greenery, We are trained not to consider it. But the subconscious does make some folks down grade because a white box is less appealing than the greenery to them. Try evening out and using less sauce. And the charring looks to be from the sugar content and going back on the smoker, but I can't tell for sure from a pic. If I were cooking and knew I wouldn't use any greenery, I'd mention this the night before to a KCBS rep, and they might make a generic comment during judging day to remind judges not to grade down due to no garnish.

Score/reason 6 Pieces are uneven in size, overly sauced and burnt not appealing at all.

5 - pieces look candied and dark; not appealing

Jim Michnowicz KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/22/2013 11:43:12 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, The meat is not spaced evenly in the box. There is space between some pieces and other pieces are touching. This could be done when moving the box. There is also too much sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Take care when placing the meat in the box to ensure the spacing of the meat is uniform. Also, do not over sauce they meat. In this box, there is too much sauce.

7, nice color, shine, good looking chicken.

9/23/2013 06:53:54 am

I would score this box a 7. Chicken is dark in color and has lots of sauce.

Suggestion: Try not to get it as dark, use less sauce, and more uniform pieces.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
9/23/2013 08:29:07 am

Score: 7 Some of the pieces look really dark and the sizes are very disproportionate.

Comment: Kudos for going without garnish but in the future take a few minutes to order your pieces to minimize the differences in size and shape ie. the piece in the middle front really sticks out because it is placed between the two largest pieces in the box.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
9/23/2013 11:24:10 am

Score 7. Reasons: The chicken is covered with a heavy sauce. On the front right piece the skin appears burnt and the front left piece the skin is pulled back. All of this does not present a good even entry and also makes me wonder if the heavy sauce was to cover the other mistakes.

7...Uneven size with sloppy sauce. Nice color.

Clean the sauce off the box.

8 - Color is very good, but slightly dark.(Could be the photo itself) A couple of the pieces look smaller, placement, while mostly uniform, is a little off. Very Good looking box.

Score/Reasons = 7, I like the color. But the lack of uniformity really hurts the score.
Suggestions/Comments = Also give you personal kudos for the no garnish presentation.

looks over sauced little patience with appearance. 6 at best

Dave Compton - KCBS MCBJ
10/13/2013 12:15:35 pm

The color is uneven and the meat could have been trimmed up neater. They don't all have to be the same size and shape but more care in trimming would create a better looking product. I'm giving this one an 8, maybe a 9 in person.

Bill Vice
10/17/2013 09:10:36 am

7 The chicken looks tasty but the pieces need to be closer to the same size.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
