Score = 7

The box is uniform but the glaze looks uneven and it's tough to tell but the skin looks a tad under-cooked and could be a little rubbery.

6 very uneven sauce coverage and cooking. I do like the fact that they still resemble chicken though, not the cloned look that everyone does these days

Score/Reasons: 7 - meat looks a colorless blah beneath all that gloppy sauce. The pieces are not neatly trimmed, if trimmed at all.

Suggestions/Comments - Fix the "reasons" above.

7...nice color but over sauced. The sauce is burnt in spots making for a very uneven appearance.

Frame the chicken a little better with the garnish

Score/Reasons = 8, Nice color on most but skin on sides looks slightly under done on a couple of them.

8 color uneven sizing ok

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

7 - Skin has differing grill marks (dark color). Gives the appearance that pieces are cooked unevenly. Sample size varies a slight bit and trimming is inconsistent. All pieces should have near the same appearance.

Jim Koepke, KCBS CBJ
10/19/2013 01:12:27 am

first of all, there looks like there might be a foreign object on the bottom left piece....assuming that is not the case....I would give this a 6. Uneven sizes, one piece is so large it looks like a breast. Uneven charring, there does not look like there was even an attempt at trimming or manicuring any of the pieces. Could use more garnish along the sides to help showcase the pieces. Uneven saucing, just looks sloppy.

Gosh, hate to do it but it looks like a 5 to me. Burnt and covering it up with sauce doesn't make it appetizing at all. Sorry, we've all been there...

Moonpie

7 - very uneven color and the sauce application seems quite uneven... in person, it might get a little higher, but passed on this view a 7 may be generous.

Suggestions: I didn't take off for uneven size but a lot of judges I sit with will. The uneven color makes me think you might need to control your temp and the closeness to the heat source.

I'd give the box a 7. The chicken looks overdone, and the sauce is not evenly distributed throughtout all of the pieces. The one plus I could give the box is that the chichen peices appear to be uniform.

David - CBJ/KCBS
10/19/2013 05:05:51 am

Score - 7 - chicken all different sizes and some not straight in box. Color of chicken very inconsistent with some areas looking almost charred.

Bobby Whitefield
10/19/2013 06:50:13 am

A poorly prepared, rather sloppy presentation. Pieces are unequal in size and care was not taken to ensure outer skin covered the thighs. Glaze is uneven and appears to be slopped on. Difficult to see the chicken pieces, but some seem undercooked. More effort in arranging the pieces for better display would have helped. While not a fan of garnish, in this case more would be better. Rate a 5.

Score 9 - Nice box that I would like to taste.

Larry MCBJ

5 - Irregular placement, color off, and doesn't look like I want any.

Is that jelly on top?

6 - Uneven sizing, uneven coloring. One piece looks burnt.

Score/Reasons = 6/odd-shaped pieces; gloppy sauce application; not a lot of attention to appearance in the box!

8. This box is very appealing to me, but i think it would not be liked by the masses. I see the dark splotches as flavor. Others may see them as a distraction.

Bill C. KCBS/MCBJ/CTC
10/19/2013 11:29:40 am

7. Too much sauce on the meat. Uneven appearance.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
10/19/2013 12:45:35 pm

Score 8. Reason the sauce is very thick and there is too much "painted" on the chicken. The sauce or the chicken appears burnt or overcooked which causes the chicken to less appealing.

Score/Reasons = 5, definitely looks "below average" to me! Looks moist, but the burnt portions reduce the appetizing aspect considerably. Not evenly sauced or evenly burnt. Pieces too dissimilar in size and everything else.

Suggestions/Comments = Garnish not evenly showing around meat. We don't judge garnish, but the box would look better if it was framed evenly.

Don

5 - very unappealing box. Sauce uneven and gloppy, not evenly spread. Some pieces have sauce, some seem not to have it at all. Almost looks breaded, could be photo. No uniformity.

Brion
10/20/2013 12:24:38 am

I give it a 7.
The pieces are uneven and not placed neatly on the box. The glaze looks burned on some of the pieces but overall the meat looks appetizing.

Suggestion:
Trim the pieces to the same size and work on the neatness of the box.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons = 7, a couple pieces look a bit charred.
Suggestions/Comments = a little more uniformity in the arrangement may help. The thigh in the upper right corner caught my eye because it looks out of place.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
10/20/2013 07:33:51 am

Score/Reasons = 6, The color is not even over all pieces of meat. Also, some areas are too dark. Appears to the sauce was burnt. The pieces are not even is size. The thighs were not placed in the box neatly. or lined up.

Suggestions/Comments = Care should be give to the time the thighs are on the grill so the sauce does not burn. Also, care should be given in attempting to box thighs that are the same size or nearly the same size. Line up the meat so the ends of the pieces are lined up.

Score/Reasons = 7, uneven char and dripping sauce reduce the score on this box.

Suggestions/Comments = none

score/reason 5, Just an average looking box little chard looking in spots, pieces not uniform in size, sauce is uneven, sloppy arrangement in the box.

Score = 6, Sauce and color is uneven. Some pieces look undercooked while others look burnt. Also the pieces are not trimmed very neatly.

5, Look moist and nice arrangement but of various sizes and some of them overlap. Color is uneven. Overall not appealing to the eye.

Matt KCBS CBJ
10/20/2013 01:19:52 pm

Score/Reasons = 6 - Average. No explanation really needed... looks like chicken an average cook could make on the grill/smoker.

Suggestions/Comments = Sauce is burnt on a few (all) pieces; try trimming to a more uniform shape and size; try for a mahogany-ish color when smoking. Just my 2 cents.

8 with my first look, the sauce is dark, spotty or uneven on the pieces.

Bill Vice

8
Chicken looks good but I scored down because the pieces are not all the same size

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
10/22/2013 01:12:39 am

Score: 7, The finish is very blotchey to the point of almost looking charred in places. Larger differences in piece sizes and shapes.

Comments: I'm not as tough on piece size/shape as a lot of judges but these are some VERY different sizes. Also, the finish is very very uneven and you can see where the sauce was brushed on in a few spots. Not a horrible box but not great either.

I Would Score This Box An 8. Chicken Has Good Color.
Suggestion: Try To Trim Chicken More
Uniform.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
