8 - Sauce is uneven. Is good to see something besides thighs once in a while.

8 lower right tip darker then the others

8 - Looks over sauced.

Finally some wings!!! I'm tired of looking at all chicken thighs. Wings excite me. I'd give the box a 9. The wings are evenly suaced and look good enough to eat. Too bad I couldn't taste one.

David - CBJ/KCBS
10/26/2013 01:38:33 am

Score - 8 One of the wings has a charred end and is a bit darker than the rest.

8 - a little light.

9. Appealing presentation, uniform looking.

score reason 8 looks good to eat and mostly consistant but looks like extra sauce in the centers and one is darker than the others

Score/Reasons = 9, WINGS = WOW!!! Looks great! Not what you expect to get in a chicken box, but looks very appetizing!

Suggestions/Comments = might want to consider leaving off the wing tips (flappers) as they truly aren't edible, but they do make the wings look complete.

9....Nice box of wings. Good color.

Almost to much sauce in the middle part of the wings.

9 - light seems to be shining in from upper left, so will forgive dark color on bottom right. Looks tasty and tender.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8. Nice looking box. A 9 without the heavy uneven saucing. I would have hidden the front right wing due to the dark char compared to the others..

Suggestions/Comments = None.

Sauce might could be a little more even as well as the arrangement

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 7, the wings are over sauced and not sauced evenly. There appears to be "globs" of sauce. The right lower wing has what appears to be a burnt tip.

Suggestions/Comments = care should be used when saucing the wings to make sure they are not over sauced and the sauce is applied evenly. Also, the tips can be cover with foil to prevent them from burning.

an 8. Good layout. even color, even sized, look moist. But top right piece is partially hidden.

9 good looking box, so nice to see something different

Bob

Score 9 - Brave enough to send something other than thighs. Good presentation as well.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
10/26/2013 12:41:44 pm

Score = 8, Nice looking wings. The only issue I can see is the wing on the lower right looks a little dark on the tip of the wing.

Comments: If you placed that dark wing in the back row so we couldn't see the dark spot, the box would look better.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score this box a 9.

I like that the wings are even in size and don't appear to have too much sauce.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
10/27/2013 06:16:01 am

Score 8. This entry could easily have been a nine and the only reason I deducted a point was due to the sauce pooled in the middle of the wing.

8 maybe 9 in person. great color equal in size nice job

I give this box an 8. Some color variation on the meat. Box is neat.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Thank you for having the courage to tackle wings for your entry. This is a nice looking box. The pieces appear "natural" and not manufactured perfection, with a nice looking sauce. The right front piece appears scortched/burnt. But for that, this would have received a 9 from me.

Suggestions/Comments: Take care and not use scortched/burnt pieces.

I would score this box a 9. Looks wonderful!

Suggestions: Try to put more meat in the box if possible.

9 - I like the color and presentation. I would like to sample this box.

Score: 9 - Nice presentation and I like the fact that the competitor went with wings; a nice change from beasts/thighs. Overall appearance very well done.

As wings go, these look really good. Based strictly on what's in the box, I don't see anything wrong.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Don't see wings at every contest. These are nice looking. The sauce is unevenly applied, but just barely. Very Good Box.

9 - Excellent color. Looks Moist.

Comment: I would love to see a box of these wings. The color is great, but another judge might deduct for the burnt tip. Still the uniform presentation is quite nice.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
10/29/2013 01:36:21 am

Score/Reasons: 9 While this is an unusual choice for chicken, it is a very pretty box; well placed wings with nice coloration and consistency.
Comments/Suggestions: I'd be interested to try these good looking wings-they look quite succulent.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
