7 - Sauce is uneven and skin has pulled back from some of the pieces. While I personally think that lollipop chicken is a form of sculpted meat, there is nothing that says they can't do it.

6 - Off-color, gloppy uneven sauce/jelly and spacing, bones look unappetizing.

Lolipop legs. Too bad the cook didn't use aluminium foil on the exposed leg bones as they look burnt. Size fairly even and not over sauced. Very shiny and appetizing. I'd give the box an 8 because the leg bones are burnt

David - CBJ-KCBS

Score - 8. Very unique presentation! The exposed bones probably should have been wrapped, or wrapped longer if already wrapped. Looks good!

6 - liked the uniformity, but hated everything else.

7. I guess these are called Lollipops? I just think the bones are not appealing looking.

7...Nice uniform size. Very pale color. Looks undercooked

Caramelize the sauce. Try to get more skin around the top.

score reason 9 I actually waffled between a 8 and 9 because not sure how I liked the bone appearance but the meat looked good and not heavy sauced and I felt that was my appearance plus when I am in beween I usually go up a score

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist and very appetizing. Different than the usual thighs. Skin should cover the meat and sauce could be spread more evenly, but still looks dad-gum good!

Suggestions/Comments = fix the above problems

8 - very creative, looks tasty, just those darn dark spots otherwise would be an easy 9

Score/Reasons = 8. Good looking bax. Color is a bit light and uneven saucing.

color looks a little off, and the bone showing is not appealing.

Score/Reasons = 6, lollipops are a neat way to present legs, but in this case, these legs are not very appetizing because the bones are burnt.. This is caused not wrapping the bones. The meat pops are not the same size, it appears some on the meat shrunk more than others.

Suggestions/Comments = Cover the bones with foil to prevent burning and darkening. After the meat is cooked, try to get pops that are of the same size and use these.

a 9! Great layout. Even color and sizing. Good spacing. Look moist.

9 good looking box and again something different

Have seen these before but not at my table yet can't wait for the opportunity to try one

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7, Sauce and color is uneven. The color is little too light and makes the chicken appear undercooked. The skin is also pulling back on a few of the drums which is unappealing as well.

Comment: If you are going to try something outside what is usually presented you need to make sure it is as close to perfect as possible or it will do poorly.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

7, possibly an 8 in person.

Too much bone showing and that distracts from the chicken.

Score 9. Wonderful looking chicken. Good color, nicely sauced. This is a box that I would really like to taste.

6 maybe 7 in person. lollipop looks great light and blotchy in color

I give this box a 7. Color is not very good and varies. Meat does not look to have any color prior to thesauce going on. Skin has pulled back on a couple of pieces, Jus tnot very appelaing.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 7 maybe 8 in person. Skin shrinking back markedly and irregularly piece-to-piece. Sauce irrelgularly applied; thankfully, the sauce is nicely done and not thick & gloppy.

Suggestions/Comments: Deal with the shrinking skin and irregular sauce and you'll get a 9 from me.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook

I would score this box a 7. Due to the color of the meat, skin peeling back on the chicken, and bone.

Suggestion: Try to get more color on the chicken, maybe using a darker sauce.

7 - Coloring is pale, skin looks uneven, a few dark spots.

DJ Martin KCBS CBJ

score/reasons = 5
Although the box is nicely arranged, the color looks too light to have properly rendered skin. The blackened bare bone is a turn off. Just doesn't get my taste buds excited... at all.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ

Scored an 8 : Nice look to the entry, but the sauce looks a bit uneven on the meat.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Hard to beat chicken with handles! Color is uneven, might be grill marks or the sauce is thicker in places. Great looking box.

Moonpie
10/28/2013 05:16:01 am

8... maybe 7. Color is a bit pale and the uneven treatment of the skin on the meat end is a bit haphazard.

Comments: I would be excited to see a box of legs. I really like that you frenched them... it shows extra time and consideration by the cook. But the color and the skin mentioned in the score really are detractors. Keep at this... I think this sort of presentation is in the right direction.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
10/29/2013 01:53:27 am

Score/Reasons: 8 While the chicken legs are very consistent in size, the coloration is not. However, they do still appear appetizing and juicy. Very good, but could be improved.

Suggestions/Comments: It seems that "Lollipop" (frenched) chicken legs are the new "hot" method lately (sort of like "cupcake" chicken was a while back), but the exposed, dark bones don't do much for the entry and in fact, are kind of distracting. I'm not as interested in the bones as I am in the meat, and it almost appears that the bones are highlighted in this entry. The eye is drawn right to that "bare bones" part of the box. Perhaps just a simple change in layout would make a difference (meaning put the meat portion of the leg in the center of the box instead)......

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
