8 like the presentation, color a bit dark

8 maybe a 9 sauce looks heavy but I would like some of that box NOW!

I would score this box an 8. Great color!
Suggestion: thin the sauce out so it when you take a bite you don't get an overpowering sauce flavor.

Steve Amos

Very interesting box, I would honestly prefer this to the parsley box, so I would only have 1 piece of shrubbery to remove from the lollipop chicken.

My score would be a 7 or 8 based on the over sweet appearance and the splochy color.

As I said, I would much prefer this to parsley, but the box needs a little better precook prep on the chicken and possibly a little different cooking technique to get a more consistent color.

Score 9
the chicken looks well prepared, shiny and nicely sauced. I'd like to eat a piece right now

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8, possibly a 9 in person.

Nice even sized pieces but sauce is a little thick.

Lorne Rae
1/14/2014 11:53:56 am

7. Nice even color, look moist, reasonable arrangement but the pieces are of different sizes and placement is uneven.

7 sauce way too thick and uneven

7 - Chicken is over sauced and lacks uniformity

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ

Chicken looks good, but too much sauce.Scored an 8.
Side note: did not affect score, but I do not like the way the garnish was used in this entry.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 8 - It is refreshing to see a box of "retro" appearing chicken. To me, this is analogous to a craft made beer vs. a manufactured brew. This has a pleasant "old school" look that looks like someone actually had their hands on it and gave it some home made TLC. To my eye, it is close to being a bit too saucy.

Suggestions/Comments: Lighten up on the suace application and fix that lettuce leaf on the left/back corner that's flopped over onto the piece of chicken.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
1/14/2014 03:13:53 pm

Score 7. The sauce on this chicken is too thick and too heavy to deserve a higher score. Even though judges do not judge garnish the poor layout and background of this entry does not show the chicken in a good manner.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ, CTC
1/14/2014 10:30:33 pm

9 - because it looks like it tastes delicious.

I don't mind the lack of uniformity, I think most judges don't - but once again - even though it shouldn't count against you - that weird garnish will hurt the scores with some judges.

GeorgeB - KCBS CBJ
1/14/2014 10:39:38 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, sauce appears to be heavily applied and globby.

Suggestions = I like the underlying appearance of the meat and the fact that I can tell they are thighs. Nice color. Garnish could be more uniform and more of it may be nice.

DJ Martin
1/14/2014 10:39:54 pm

Score/Reasons = 7 Way too much sauce poured on after the cook.

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
1/14/2014 11:01:59 pm

Score/Reasons = 9, not perfect, but looks dad-gum good to me!

Suggestions/Comments = try to pick more similar sized thighs if possible. Spread sauce more evenly.

RandyE
1/14/2014 11:16:53 pm

I give this box an 8. Too much sauce, hides the meat. The pieces are all different in size and shape.

joe
1/14/2014 11:59:17 pm

8 - Looks very good, too much sauce for a nine. I would like to see it a little closer, question the lettuce in the lower right and upper left...red tipped? or starting to brown?

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/15/2014 12:13:55 am

Score/Reasons = 8, the nonuniform size and shapes of the thighs do not concern me, because chickens are not uniform. However, the amount of sauce is a concern. With so much sauce, it is almost impossible to taste the meat. One can taste only the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/15/2014 01:36:55 am

Score/Reasons = 7. Heavy sauce on the meat detracts; not appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = none

9 Yes, I know it looks too saucy and too sticky, but dadgum - it just
looks great in the box! Nice touch on the green stuff.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
1/15/2014 01:45:42 am

7 - Above average box. Meat appears moist but sauced unevenly and a little heavily. Samples don't appear to be trimmed evenly, if trimmed at all.

Larry MCBJ
1/15/2014 01:56:36 am

8 - Gloppy, over sauced, and the table will need more napkins.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK
1/15/2014 02:45:18 am

7.....Nice color. Way over sauced. The thigh on the left middle could use some trimming. The front two pieces are different size and one in angled differently.

If you are going to use garnish make it work for you. Frame the meat.

Shawn Higgins
1/15/2014 02:47:13 am

Score = 8

The pieces look moist and uniform but the glaze appears to be a little heavy. If the glaze was not as heavy you would have a 9.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/15/2014 04:29:21 am

Score = 8, sauce is way to heavy, it is also uneven.

Comments: Remember less is more when it comes to sauce. First and foremost it is a meat competition.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC
1/15/2014 05:56:12 am

SCORE/REASONS: 8. Over-sauced.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
1/15/2014 09:34:15 am

score / reason 7 look a little dark, looks to be over sauced, pieces could be more uniform in size giving it a better presentation.

Raine® link

7 placement could have been a little more orderly. Otherwise a 8 or 9
Great color and love that the chicken was presented in a natural state to look like chicken thighs. Really looks inviting to take a bite.

Placement of meat could have improved the look and garnish could have been more appealing.

Doug KCBS CBJ/TC Cook
1/21/2014 11:15:17 am

8, Looks like its over sauced,

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/21/2014 12:20:02 pm

Score/Reasons = 6, unevenly trimmed, chicken looks overcooked and over sauced and all that sauce is blotchy and uneven. That is a full looking box, though, which is nice.

Suggestions/Comments = Spend some time trimming that chicken and go sparingly on the sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
