SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: 8. Nice big juicy looking thighs. Even up the sauce for a 9.

SUGGESTIONS: Appreciate the safe cooking aspect here, but ditch the used glove in the picture & clean up the smudge.

Score/Reasons = 8, the meat has just a bit too much sauce. The thighs are not evenly sauced. The lower left thigh is not sauced on the left portion. The other pieces of meat, also, are not sauced evenly, especially on the sides of the thighs.

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce, don't over sauce. If sauce is to be used, make sure the whole thigh is sauced.

Score/Reasons = 9, not perfect, but definitely worth a 9 from me!

Suggestions/Comments = maybe a little less sauce and spread more evenly would make this look a wee bit better, but it's still a 9 in my book.

Well prepared; well presented with uniform pieces with an even glaze. Wonder what that is in the upper right corner of the box? A solid 9.

Score 8. Another picture taken too close to the box, but based on what is available and the heavy sauce this would be my score. ( I believe that boxes, Ribs #181, Pork 173, Ribs 181, along with this box must have been taken by the same person and are not a good representation.)

Score/Comment: 9/One of the more "perfect" specimens I've seen. None are really perfect, but there's just no justifiable reason to score them at anything less! Great job!

9- Nice box. the chief did a great job on the skin. The color is good and the sauce is not too heavy. I gave it a 9 because it popped out at first glance as a drop dead box.

I'll give the slobbers on the box a pass, hoping that you'll clean up before turn in..
This box is the ideal hope of every cook, similar sized thighs cooked well with a nice lite coating (in most areas) of sweet, spiced sauce.
Sorry, but also very uninspiring!!
I want "dang I never saw that before"
I'm not seeing "excellent" but very good it is, 8.

Comments: At first glance I love the color, sizes and shapes of the chicken. Not over or under sauced. My only pick wasn't enough to drop the score but the (pepper?) looks almost like soot. Some folks might drop it for that. Great box!

Score 9 - beautiful mahogany finish; even sauce that looks like it would have a peppery bite. Sauce smeared on right side of box wouldn't count against it, just make sure it's not delivered to the turn-in that way

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. Have fun and learn for ways to improve your scores. If you are way off from the average of these scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
