Score= 9 nicely done; not too much sauce; garnish kept to a minimum. time taken to crisp the skin. Plus extra for the volunteers!

Score. 9. Beautiful, makes me Hungary

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ
1/29/2014 09:58:28 pm

8 - All the color seems to be coming from the sauce, what you can see under the sauce looks kind of pale...makes me think the skin will be a bit flabby.

Doyle
1/29/2014 10:19:42 pm

9 - nice looking box. Pieces are uniform in size, shape and color.

Ike, KCBS/CBJ
1/29/2014 10:53:53 pm

Score:8

Nice even pieces but sauce appears gobby. Other than that this box would be a 9.

Dan KCBS CTC, MCBJ

9 nice box

I give this one a 9, just like the looks of the box, and the pieces are good in size.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/30/2014 12:49:55 am

Score/Reasons = 8, Lighten up on the sauce and enen up the color and it's a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = Grill marks can be a challenge as they give judges more to pick on (uniformity).

DJ KCBS/CBJ
1/30/2014 12:58:15 am

Score/Reasons 8 Too much sauce applied after the cook.

Shawn Higgins
1/30/2014 01:20:10 am

Score = 9

Wow!!! This entry just pops out. Color, consistency in the glaze, and uniformity are spot on. The pieces look moist and juicy. I would eat the whole box myself if it is as good as it looks!!!

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
1/30/2014 01:29:03 am

Score 9. Maybe it is caused by our very snowy, cold winter, but this entry makes me hungry for some great BBQ. This is an excellent entry nice even color on the meat and a reasonable amount of sauce. Good Job.

Ronnie Burnett

9-meat looks great

Ed
1/30/2014 01:55:04 am

I suppose I could nitpick about size, and sauce being a smidge gloppy, but not gonna.
I give thee a 9 for excellence in chicken.

Mike, CBJ- KCBS, GBA
1/30/2014 02:37:23 am

9Good color, nice shine. Pieces look the same size and symmetrical in the box. Nice box.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
1/30/2014 02:44:44 am

Score = 8, Color is not quite uniform and the sauce is too heavy and also looks uneven.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
1/30/2014 02:46:33 am

Score/Reasons: 9; Very nice! It's a shame we can't taste this one!

Suggestions/Comments: The level of sauce on this chicken is borderline, but since the meat is clearly visible I didn't deduct. I would be careful not to get too heavy-handed with the sauce tho, as some judges are really touchy about it.

Score 9
The chicken peices are fairly even, glossy and not too much sauce.
I'D LIKE TO TASTE A PIECE!

Jim S. NEBS KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 7, Saucing looks very erratic
Suggestions/Comments = Nice looking box(uniformity of meat). Uneveness of sauce too distracting.

Bob

Score 9- This is well organized , looks to be well cooked and the cook wants to share their entry with volunteers and table captains.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
1/30/2014 04:40:57 am

8 - Nice uniform pieces, but appear to be slightly over sauced/glazed.
Great looking box.

Larry MCBJ

DQ - The sauce has items over 1/8 inch. (Could tell better in person.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
1/30/2014 04:45:11 am

score/reason very strong 8 possibly 9 in person, great color, good uniformity looks a little blotchy on the sauce, defiantly would like to taste these mmmm

8 - Nice looking box, very good presentation. Would recommend changes to the sauce, it looks very thick like jam. Appears like a cover up and not an enhancement.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/30/2014 12:38:31 pm

Score/Reason: 7/Placement is sloppy and sauce is unevenly applied; lack of attention to detail.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
1/30/2014 02:42:14 pm

Score/Reasons: 9 - beautiful appearing chicken. It's great to see a box of chicken that obviously was prepared with love and care of a skilled cook. Even better, if doesn't look at all like it had been manufactured, cooked and spit out by a machine. Thanks to the cook for reminding us what REAL chicken looks like.

Suggestions/Comments: None! Thank you.

I would score this box an 8. Sauce is a little heavy.
Suggestions: try to make the sauce the same thickness across the top of the chicken.

Ira Trexler
1/31/2014 08:23:06 am

I would score this an 8 maybe 9 if I saw it in person. good uniformity. Maybe a pit too much sauce..

9--- small but all the same size

Tom - CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 8, a few problems, but looks dad-gum good to me! Uneven coloration and saucing, and oversauced IMHO, but still looks very good.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish isn't framing very evenly, but that is NOT a scoring factor.

Raine® link
2/3/2014 05:20:01 am

Score/Reasons= 7 Nice arrangement, would have scored higher if the sauce was applied more evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = More detail and attention could be applied to garnish. If garnish is used it should be evenly arranged to frame the meat.

9 - nice presentation

jaja01 KCBE MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, the box look good but not perfect, A bit too much sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = Just back a little on the sauce to make it less globey looking

Robert CBJ/KCBS
2/16/2014 08:01:08 am

Score=8 Nice uniform size and placement.
Comment=Sauce is uneven. Black specks and possibly burned glaze on a few pieces.

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/16/2014 08:28:53 am

Score/Reasons = 9, looks appetizing, uniform.

Suggestions/Comments = Watch sauce amount. Looks borderline too much. Like the grill marks.

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
