BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - I like the color and the presentation but the sizes could be a little more uniform otherwise it would be a 9.

9 looks perfect to me. Some pieces charred a little more than others but not enough to lower the score, imo.

8 - Sauce looks good but the burnt marks may be to much

8-could have alitte less black on chicken

8 bottoms look alot darker

8 - The picture probably doesn't do the meat justice, Nice glaze appearance abd the meat looks moist.

8. The pieces are uniform in size, color and have good placement and arrangement. However, they appear oversauced and the dark spots appear to be random and hence detract from the overall eye appeal.

8--nice glaze and 'char' marks but really difficult to judge from this pic

8 all parts about the same size- nice color

Score/Reasons = 8, Great looking chicken even up the coloring a bit and it's a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = Great photo, but not for judging. keep the focus even and take the picture from the judges' perspective with a full box in view.

Score = 7.

Bad picture...too much sauce and some of it is burned.

I would score this box a 9. Glaze looks amazing!
Suggestion: Try to trim pieces a little more even.

6 - Char marks, spotty and over sauced, lite color looks undercooked.

Jim Perry

Score/Reasons = 7

These look grilled more than smoked. Burnt places on multiple pieces and what looks missing sauce on the back left piece.

Greenery looks nice as does the consistency of the piece size.

8 - Nice color, looks moist and appetizing. Some of the marks are quite dark. Great looking box.

Christopher James

Score = 7 The box has great looking garnish! However, the chicken is glazed a bit much for my taste. The chicken also looks anemic, with some added grill marks to try and give it color. I'd guess to look that it was a bit undercooked from the smoker, and had to be finished on the grill.

Looks like it may be over cooked

I give this one an 8. Looks like I would want to jump in and take a bite. But not trimmed even. Just needs to be cleaned up.

8- Nice looking box, great color and shine; good presentation with symmetrical pieces.

Point deducted because of the blackened or burned parts on various pieces. These areas detract from the overall appearance of the box.

Score 7
The pieces look burnt, the pieces aren't even. But it may tast better than it looks

Score/Reasons = 7, unevenly (over) sauced and unevenly blackened. Doesn't look very appetizing with the black areas.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish looks pretty good with the exception of the right side of the box where it is raised. meat should be centered in the box (too far to the right side). Non-scoring points, but would make things look better.

I'm seeing grilled chicken with burnt sauce.
Trimmed OK, probably tastes OK.
Average OK 6.

Score/Reasons = 8, too much sauce. I like the grill marks. Not affecting the score is the unfocused picture

Suggestions/Comments = Use less sauce and let the meat show through and let it stand on its own merits

Tiffany KCBS CBJ - CTC

7 - Between the burnt spots and pale skin under the sauce it just doesn't look too appetizing.

7 Thighs are a bit on the small side .Uneven color . But they still look great !

Score = 7, Some pieces have burnt spots and the sauce is uneven

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 8. Too much sauce.

Shawn Higgins
2/19/2014 03:59:09 am

Score = 8

I don't like the angle of the photo shot and it is out of focus, which tends to detract from looking at all of the pieces equally. That said, grill marks are nice, pieces appear to be uniform, but really hard to tell if the sauce is consistent across all pieces. The presentation looks clean but just can't give it a 9.

GeorgeB
2/19/2014 04:13:36 am

Score/Reasons=7, pieces appear to be off-center in the box. I do like the charring and grill marks, however, a few piece seem to have more char than the others. I may have scored this an eight if the picture was better but I have to call it as I see it.

Suggestions=more care with placement in the box. A more even appeareance accross all pieces would help. The color looks nice and appealing.

8 - Very nice presentation, two points to consider: 1) too much sticky sauce 2) your colors are sauce, black, and white where sauce is missing on the back two pieces.

Score - 7....pieces different sizes, too much garnish showing, glaze appears very thick. Color uneven

7 at best....Chicken looks undercooked and the sauce over cooked. Sauced about right with a sheen. Nice sized pieces.

Great job on the garnish. Separate the pieces down the middle to help fill up the box.

Bob. CBJ/KCBS

Score: 7 Glaze appears uneven and burnt. Does not look appetizing.

Suggestion: Don't crowd pieces and pay more attention to the sauce setting.

Score/Reasons: 7 - Pluses: Nicely, but not perfectly trimmed, nice grill marks, no heavy thick gloppy sauce. Minuses: Heavily blotchy, maybe scortched, finish in places; uneven sauce...see prominent white spot on left-front piece;

Suggestions/Recommendations: Fix the "Minuses" above. I love rustic, but it won't fare well in competition.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
2/20/2014 09:18:40 am

Score 9. This is what I believe BBQ chicken should look like. Nice color of the chicken, a sauce that allows you to see the meat and is not so dark or thick to hide the chicken.

Steve Rounds
2/20/2014 11:37:54 pm

Black stripes don't look very appetizing. Could have squared up the thighs alittle more. Maybe too much sauce. Appearance (6) average.

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ

A neat and professional looking box, however the chicken doesn't have that "uniform" look to it. I scored an 8.

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:49:29 pm

Score/Reasons = 7; consistency is king and the grill marks aren't; I think I would be tasting carbon on a few of the samples, not smoke; on the plus side, the sauce looks just right - more of a glaze, and the size is consistent. Could be easy an easy eight if the grill marks weren't burn marks.

Suggestions/Comments = We don't judge garnish (unless it's illegal)but I really like the look of the left and front garnish. Unfortunately, the right and back look like they came up short. Grill marks are neat looking but may hurt you more than they help if they are burn marks.

Matt KCBS CBJ
2/25/2014 02:05:02 am

Score/Reasons = 8, very good looking skinless thighs. Gave an 8 because of the few spots that got overcooked.

Suggestions/Comments = I'd try for more uniform trimming... and that is some of the tightest parsley I have ever seen in a turn in box!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
