BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 - I like the color and the presentation, I'm ready to eat.

9 nice box might ease up on the sauce

8. The pieces are nicely arranged and have good color and evenly sauced. However three of the pieces are noticeably smaller so detract from a uniform appearance.

Score = 7.

Too much sauce and chicken looks undercooked.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 7, heavy, gloppy sauce drops the score on this box.

Suggestions/Comments = show the box from the judges' perspective for the most accurate scoring.

I would score this box an 8. Color of the meat is great!
Suggestion: Build your parsley box up full so it looks like the meat is popping out at you and not setting down below the edges.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Spotty over sauced and needs trimming.

Jim Perry
2/18/2014 02:04:37 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, Pieces are not uniform in size. It might appear that you ran out of garnish with it just being on the bottom.

Suggestions/Comments = When presenting for appearance the table captain raises the lid of the box and "pans" the table. By placing your pieces vertically it would make your box look different (and perhaps "off") to some judges.

8 - Great color, most pieces are similar in size and shape. Very Nice.

Christopher James
2/18/2014 10:44:50 pm

Score = 9 I like that the meat is placed in the box carefully, all facing the same way. I also do not mind that the portions are large, natural, and not "muffin-cupped." The cook is even, and so is the saucing.

8
I would like to see more uniform sizes

Mike CBJ KCBS, GBA

8- Looks good, nice color, good shine and not too much sauce.

Could improve score if pieces were trimmed a little better. excess skin on the sides detracts from appearance score.

I give this a high 7. The meat needs to be trimmed some, and the sauce is a liitle heavy.

Score/Reasons = 9, I'm not a fan of the totally "untrimmed" thighs, but the meat looks excellent. Looks moist and evenly sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = TRIM the thighs to look more uniform (shouldn't be a scoring point, but would look MUCH better). frame the garnish around the meat.

Ed KCBS/MCBJ

We're not going to look at your entry sideways in the tent so don't show it that way here! The view this way is a 6 or 7, from the front it may have been 7 or 8.
Not trimmed very well, not sauced very well.
All I got for you is above average 7, and that's being generous.

Score/Reasons = 9, Too much sauce. The sauce needs to be applied evenly. I like the natural shape of the thighs instead of the little unnatural "muffin" thighs

Suggestions/Comments = just use a little less sauce and ensure it is evenly applied.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

9 - The sauce may be a bit too heavy but it looks delicious and I'm glad you didn't 'form' the thighs.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8 Sauce is too heavy and a little uneven. I can see water droplets on the box from where it was sprayed. The size of the pieces are uneven.

Comments: With a visible difference in size of the piece keep the box symmetrical. Arrange the pieces from largest to smallest. Symmetry is pleasing to the eye and will score better. Also go easier on the sauce. 90% of the judges I have sat with do not like heavily sauced chicken.

Score/Reasons: 8. Too much sauce.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 7

Clean presentation and the pieces are uniform in size and shape but could use a little trimming. The color is a little light and the glaze is a bit too heavy for my liking. Overall, not too bad.

GeorgeB

Score/Reasons=7, the color is not appealing to me. Size and shape of pieces are a rather uneven, and sauce is a bit heavy.

Suggestions=careful trimming would be beneficial.

8 - Nice looking chicken, nice arrangement. Sauce appears very thick, too thick.

8..... Good color. Meat looks moist. Need to do more trimming and sizing.

Sauce is borderline over sauced. When you spritz the box lay a paper towel on the sides.

Score - 8..glaze appears quite uneven

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score: 7. Uneven pieces. Uneven sauce.

Suggestion: More attention to meat trimming. Maintain even saucing on all pieces.

Score/Reasons: 7; Pluses: 6 pieces in box. Minuses: Trimming is uneven & inconsistent, piece-to-piece; Sauce is unevenly applied AND is way gloppy thick.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix the minuses above.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 9. Excellent looking chicken. I would just caution the team to watch the amount of sauce. I would consider this amount of sauce acceptable, but any more or heavier and it would cost one point.

Could have made the thighs look more uniform. they do look appetizing. Appearance (7) above average

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ

A very nice looking entry, but just a "touch" too much sauce for my liking. I gave it an 8.

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:40:35 pm

Score/Reasons = 8; looks juicy with just a little too much sauce; I like the flecks in the sauce -- looks interesting; mostly uniform in size (top right a bit small); nice to see a more natural shape

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges might ding for the raggedy bits around the edges. The pic is taken from the side. Note the smallest piece would then be front right to the judges. Not a good idea. You could hide that by layering the samples slightly putting the smaller samples in-between the larger pieces.

Matt KCBS CBJ
2/25/2014 02:07:52 am

Score/Reasons = 7, I like the "natural" shape of the chicken thighs, but they look a little heavy on the sauce and could stand to be cleaned up just a bit. The box is nice and full.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure you use the garnish to make the product "pop" and be elevated from down inside the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
