BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score = 6.

The sauce that was used on this chicken is not appetizing at all.

I would score this box an 8. Very interesting entry!!
Suggestion: Be careful of the size of the ingredients you are using that they are not to large.

FRANK KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 5, Nice presentation, but unappetizing due to the heavy, mottled, dark coating.

Suggestions/Comments =Be careful that the chunks do not exceed the 1/8 inch limit.

Larry MCBJ

DQ - Sauce ingredients over 1/8 inch.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

8 - Uniform shape and size. Piece at upper right has a divot in it. Appears to have plenty of seasoning.

9
Looks delicious

Mike CBJ KCBS, GBA

7- Too much sauce! The darkness of the sauce gives the appearance of being burnt. Not a good appearance.

The size and presentation look good, less sauce may improve the score

I give this one a 8. Might go higher if I saw it in person. Like the size of the pieces. Looks a little dark, but hard to tell from pic.

Score 7
The peices look burnt, dry, and there is too much spice on them.

Score/Reasons = 6, while the black is evenly distributed, it is still black which is NOT appetizing to me! Looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments = center the meat better so that garnish is framing the meat evenly around the outside.

Ed KCBS/MCBJ

Nice job of trimming, very professional looking. However a couple shades too dark, my inclenation is it would taste burnt.
I'm in for a above average 7.

Score/Reasons = 6, the sauce, dark color and the specks of spices makes this box unappetizing to me. A little dark color is ok but this much may cause the meat to have a burnt taste.

Suggestions/Comments = I like a little carmelization on the meat but this is too much. Make use the meat does not get so dark, and be careful of the spices. It appears the spices are nearing the acceptable size allowed. (1/8 inch, I think)

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

8 - Not sure what all the tiny bits are and the sauce looks a little charred.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
2/19/2014 02:40:21 am

Score = 7: Pieces are a little too dark to look very appetizing. Good uniformity on size and shape though.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 7. Too dark

Shawn Higgins

Score = 8

This is a very interesting submission. I like the bark. The pieces are uniform in size, shape, color and look very hearty (meaty). I think the only drawback, for me personally, would be the texture.

Good submission...very interesting.

Score/Reasons=6, there appears to be heavy charring under the layer of sauce. The bits in the sauce and the color of the sauce are a turn-off for me.

Suggestions=nothing to add except address the issues affecting the score.

7 - nice arrangement, even sized pieces. Not sure how to respond to the rub, would suggest dialing it back some for appearance sake.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

7.......Nice sized pieces. Scorched sauce. Probably a 9 if the sauce was the right color.

Frame the back of the box a little better.

David - CMBJ/KCBS
2/19/2014 07:53:44 am

score - 7. the arrangement is nice but whatever has been done to the skin makes it very unappetizing.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
2/19/2014 11:21:17 am

Score: 8 Nice uniform pieces. Sauce appears to be over carmalized.

Suggestion: Watch for over saucing and over carmalizing.

Score/Reasons: 7; Pluses: At least 6 pieces in box; all pieces consistent consistently sized & trimmed. Minuses: Sauce is way too heavy, thick, gloppy, and uneven. Skin is shrinking up to expose the meat on many pieces.

Suggestions/Comments: Fix the minuses above.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 6. The thick dark coating and seeds (?) are a real turn-off for this box. As always, I view an entry as if this was served on my plate in a restaurant and with this chicken it would be a real disappointment.

Nice uniform large thighs. Looks to be burnt sauce or seasoning on the tops. First impressions are lasting impressions. right through taste and tenderness. Appearance (6) average

Steve R - KCBS and BBQ Brethren CBJ

GREAT looking entry. Neat and uniform in appearance and I am very anxious to judge this one. Well deserved 9

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:23:08 pm

Score/Reasons = 7; looks burnt in places although I like the look of the seasoning on the surface; size is relatively consistent; coating looks inconsistent; I get the feeling that my first taste will be of carbon from being burnt

Suggestions/Comments = If this was burnt, consider removing the skin; skin doesn't have to be submitted and we only judge what we get. That could save you a few points overall.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
