BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - nice presentation, would have been a 9 if all the pieces were uniform in size. Top left piece looks quite a bit smaller than the others.

9 looks weird to me but that doesn't mean it looks bad. Will this ever be considered sculpted?

Ernie CJB/KCBS

9 - Chicken is uniform and an unique arrangement. The presentation makes you want to take a bit.

9! Great layout. Even sized and color. Look moist. Very creative and eye appealing.

Score = 8.

I like the arrangement and the fact they did something different. However, the chicken looks a little dry.

I would score this box a 9! Looks beautiful!!
Suggestion: Keep doing what you are doing!

8 - Doesn't have the eye appeal, no WOW factor.

8 - Nice appearance, upper left sample is slightly smaller. Even color and appear moist. A lot of work - Nice job.

Score = 9 Great presentation; nicely sauced and garnished. Looking good enough to eat!

Suggestion: Just a comment on the photography--I would have loved to be able to see this box better--the image is small, and out of focus...This is a great-looking box, show it off!

The top left one got trimmed a bit too much

8- Nice presentation, good color, good shine and the bones are not burnt.

Perhaps use bigger legs; the ones presented appear small in the box.

I give this one a 9. Very even pieces, and the color is very good, and looks very well presented.

Score 9
The lollipop legs look beautiful. The bones are nice & clean, and there is not too much sauce on them.

Ed KCBS/MCBJ
2/19/2014 12:16:54 am

There's a new look! Nice french job without burning the stems.
The back left leg is yelling at me tho. Thanks to the lack of saucy sauce I would expect to be able to taste all the effort you put into these legs.
A very strong score of 8.

Score/Reasons = 8, the appearance of the "meat" is pretty good, but the arrangement leaves something to be desired.

Suggestions/Comments = Don't have garnish covering any of the meat! Present the meat so that you can see every piece easily (not scoring points, but would make things look better).

Score/Reasons = 9, these lolly pops look pretty. The back left legs appears to be quite a bit smaller the the others. This may be due to the angle of the picture.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure the legs are about the same size. I like this box.

9 - I like it - looks perfectly cooked and sauced and placement well thought out!

Simple, yet elegant. Lollipops are really tough to pull off! Great job in color, consistency, and uniformity.

Really good submission.

8.....A lot of work and preparation went into this box. Meat looks overcooked and dry. Looks burnt around the edges.

Nothing to add that's not mentioned above.

Score/Reasons: 9; Pluses: Beautifully trimmed, sauced & presented. Minuses; Sauce/color is slightly uneven in places. Not taking off for that.

Suggestions/Comments: See the minuses above. Stick with this style. Make sure this box gets to my table when I'm judging.

Score 8. I love the look of frenched legs. The reason for the point deduction is the dark and heavy/thick coating on the legs.

Steve Rounds
2/20/2014 11:55:51 pm

This is a very unique box. The undesirable parts of the chix leg have been removed. Great. Because of the uniqueness, uniformity in leg sizes, and presentation. (9) Excellent

Although not a big fan of "lollypops", this looks terrific !
Nice job = 9

Eric KCBS MCBJ
2/24/2014 12:16:16 pm

Score/Reasons = 9; appearance looks very appetizing; well thought out placement; nice color; looks moist

Suggestions/Comments = cool look that's rarely seen, the popsicle chicken will surely get a second look; it's different and that usually is good. Note the back left piece looks a little smaller. Some judges may ding that.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
