BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 nice, it looks good

may want to try to even out that nice color

7 uneven char is off putting. adding a glaze may even out the appearance.

7 - The top piece on the left looks burnt. The color is a little to dark for my liking and the pieces aren't uniform in size.

Score/Reasons 7 Color looks a little dull. Play with the arrangement.

Suggestions/Comments
Even the garnish out so that it frames the meat like a picture frame.

8---looks dry?

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 7- I like the color...a bit dark by most of today's competition standards, but I like it anyway. I like that the pieces are uniformly NOT slathered with a thick gloppy sauce. What I find off-putting is the lack of uniformity of the pieces...some with full skin, some with almost none at all, some in between. The pieces could be trimmed better so the skin covers each one uniformly.

Suggestions/Comments: Carefully trim the pieces so they're uniform in size & shape and covered in skin uniformly. Cook the piece so they're as uniform in color as possible.

Sauce looks different on each piece. 7

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons - 8/The two pieces at the top of the box look like they came from a different grill.

8-one in back left looks dark

7. A good standard arrangement. However, they look dry, are of differing sizes and the skin color is solid on some and blotchy on others.

Scotty

Uneven sizes of pieces, maybe rearrange to try to pair up sizes better, 7 without being able to taste.

JohnnyY/CBJ,KCBS,NCPC,NCBS

Score/Reason - 7: size of pieces and uniformity of color is lacking

Suggestion/Comment - select pieces that are more uniform in size for presentation also the appearance would be enhanced if color was even on all pieces.

Score/Reasons = 7, piece are not uniform in size or color. Back pieces look burnt.

Suggestions/Comments = More sauce could help appearance.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 7

Pieces are similar in size but the outside is just not appealing. Need to do a better job of using sauce.

Score/Reasons = 8, nice color on the meat; not over garnished. Looks minimally sauced--if at all. I would have liked to see an additional piece in there for the crew.

I give this one an 8. Skin is pulling back, looks like it could have been trimmed some.

Score 8
The chicken's sauce is not evenly applied. The back 2 pieces look OK. Somehow the chicken appears dry

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
3/12/2014 01:19:37 am

Score/Reasons = 7, I liked the fact that this is not over sauced, but the back left looks too dark.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to even up the color on each meat for better scores.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

7 - The sauce looks overcooked and something tells me the taste will be off, maybe bitter, because of it. The sauce is also inconsistent.

Score/Reasons = 6, looks "average" to me! unevenly sauced, looks dry, uneven coloration, skin shrinkage. Just not very appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = trim the thighs a bit to make them more uniform in appearance. Not a scoring factor, but would make them look better.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

This dry offering dry looks dry like dry it dry might dry be dry a dry little dry dry.
If you use your BBQ words for 6 being "average" is this entry average? I'm sorry to me this is not average chicken it is actually below average to me. So when I give it that 5 I can justify it by definition, not worrying about how I match up with the rest of my table.

Score = 7; Chicken at the back of the box looks too dark, while the chicken up front has a very uneven color.

BlueSmoke KCBS MCBJ/COMP COOK

6.......Over cooked and looks dry. Back left thigh looks burnt. Skin pulled away from the meat.

Put the sauce on at the end of the cook. Cook at a lower temp so the skin doesn't pull off the meat. Do a better trim job.

Larry MCBJ

7 - Looks dry and has burnt spots. Looks like it was scraped-off.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/12/2014 06:47:20 am

Score 7. The uneven color, the shrinkage of the skin, and the dark uneven coating are the reasons for this score.

Ernie KCBS/CTC
3/12/2014 08:24:32 am

8 - Sauce is uneven/may be a little burnt.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ
3/12/2014 08:27:44 am

8 - Samples have a dry appearance. Could be trimmed a little better.
Nice box.

I would score this box a 7. Meat looks a little dry and sauce is not even.
Suggestion: Place some more parsley in the box to raise the meat up for show.

8 - Color issues kept me from giving a nine, the back left piece is way darker than the rest.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
