BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 color looks great, looks juicy

7 looks kind of rough and globby aka uneven sauce application.

8 - It looks like there is too much sauce, the pieces aren't uniform and they are a little dark.

score = 8 sauce uneven

John - KCBS / MCBJ,, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge

Score/Reasons: 8 - I like the color. I like the NOT oversauced pieces.

Suggestions/Comments: Trim each piece so they're the same size. Here, the left front thigh is huge compared to the left middle thigh immediately behind it, which is the smallest appearing piece in the box. Make sure the skin covers each piece uniformly; you don't want some pieces fully covered, while other pieces are only partially covered.

Chicken looks terrific but the sauce isn't uniform on all pieces.
A "high" 8

8. Nice arrangement, even color and they look moist. However, the lower left sample is much larger than the others.

9, meat looks moist, greenery could use a little more work.

Score/Reasons = 8, piece in the front is larger than the others.Meat looks well seasoned and sauced.Makes me hungry looking at it. Could be a 9 in person.

Suggestions/Comments = keep each piece same size

Score = 8

Nice even sized pieces but again the sauce looks uneven. A little more time with the sauce would have made this a 9.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color and glazing; effective garnish, and meat looks moist. Nice box.

Comment: I always like to see a full box of product.

8 may have been mishandled but looks lopsided

Score 9
The pieces are glazed and shiny. The glaze could've been a bit more even, but I will not downgrade them for it.

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice looking box. A moist look without dripping in sauce! Well done!

Suggestions/Comments = None

8 - The sauce is a bit spotty, but overall it looks tasty!

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 8, uneven saucing and coloration, skin shrinkage on upper right thigh, looks almost dry on a couple thighs, all points detract from appetizing appeal a little.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish needs to "frame" the meat to improve the looks of the box - NOT a scoring point.

Wow! Mouth just juiced up. When they talk about a 9 meaning the judge just wants to grab it and eat it, this is it...
Excellent 9

8.......Appetizing looking box of chicken. Like the color and shine. Sauce is goopy in spots.

More garnish along the right side would fame the meat better and make the box look more balanced.

Score = 8; Sauce is a little uneven

Score/Reasons = 8 nice color and sheen. Love the natural look and shape. Play with the arrangement to see if the pieces will fit together better.

Suggestions/Comments

Even the garnish out so that it frames the meat like a picture frame or no garnish at all.

I would score this box an 8. Chicken look a little to dark in color, but it could be because of the pic.
Suggestion: Your pieces of chicken are trimmed perfectly, but the garnish in the box does not look even.

9 - Meets all criteria for a nine; however, I would prefer less sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
