BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons = 7 Nice natural looking chicken. However looks like a couple of the pieces are not evenly sauced.

Suggestions/Comments
Even out the garnish to frame the meat like a picture frame.

Brad KCBS/CBJ

9 nice shine, looks juicy, it doesn't need to be red to look good

Doyle Hill
3/11/2014 01:59:33 pm

8 - Nice color, pieces aren't uniform

6 missing sauce in visible areas, exposed meat doesn't look completely cooked as evidenced by the pinkish color but may be, just doesn't look appetizing.

8 +

score = 8 nice color, size not uniform

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
3/11/2014 03:14:28 pm

Score/Reasons: 7 - I like the color of the pieces. I like that they're NOT oversauced. The pieces need to be uniformly trimmed and uniformly sauced. As it is, some pieces are larger than others and all pieces are only partially sauced.

Suggestions/Commensts: Fix the "reasons" above.

A great looking entry ----> 9

8-some pieces look small

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
3/11/2014 04:06:34 pm

Score/Reasons = 9/Nice color, size of the two thighs at the top could be a problem, but not for me. But I would be cautious about matching the size of the pieces.

8. Nice arrangement, even color and look moist. However, the upper right sample is much smaller than the others and spoils the otherwise uniform pattern within the box.

Scotty

Not sure about this one, the 2 pieces in the back too small compared to others probably a 6.

bruce nickels
3/11/2014 11:18:39 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, back right piece is smaller than others. Chicken looks too white.

Suggestions/Comments = allow a little more char to caramelize the sauce and get a deeper color. keep pieces more uniform in size. Maybe more garnish?

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Spot on upper left piece is a little distracting but in person I'm sure this would be a great looking box of chicken.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color; good glazing; definitely looks like something I would want to dig into!

8 color good, sizing could be better

Score 9
The pieces are fairly even and the glaze looks right. Not too thick. they are shiny and appetizing looking.

I give this one a 9. Good looking box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
3/12/2014 01:27:15 am

Score/Reasons = 9, maybe an 8 in person. These look a bit light in color but may be the exposure.

Suggestions/Comments = None

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

8 - I know it's hard to get consistent sizes - but that kind of throws me off on this one.

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS & comp cook
3/12/2014 01:54:05 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks pretty appetizing, but the front pieces are lacking sauce on the edges.

Suggestions/Comments = make sure to "frame" the meat with garnish - no "frame" on the rights side - not a scoring point, but sure would make the box look better.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Chicken appears to be well cooked, sauced, and presented.
I see no reason to not give an excellent 9.

9....Good looking box that looks like chicken. Meat looks moist. Nicely sauced with a good shine.

Some Judges will mark down for the small thigh on the top right. Do a better job with your garnish.

Score = 8; Thigh in the back left of the box looks like it has a finger print right in the middle of it.

7 - Spotty sauce and off-color.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/12/2014 06:41:06 am

Score 9. Nice color, not over sauced, and even though it has been somewhat formed it was not overdone.

Ernie KCBS/CTC

8 - nice looking box, skin could be a little darker, may be the photo

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

9 - Great looking chicken box. Appear to be moist, well trimmed, and evenly sauced.

I would score this box a 9. Looks great!
Suggestion: Try to trim each piece evenly.

8 - Nice presentation. Color is a little pale and the back two pieces are visually smaller than the rest.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
