BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons= 9 nice even color, very inviting.

Suggestions/Comments

Play with the placement, even garnish on all sides

9 looks uniform, nice color, nice glaze

Doyle Hill
3/11/2014 02:01:51 pm

7 - Too much sauce, they aren't uniform in size and the color is too dark

9 looks pretty good to me. nice consistent saucing and shapes although personally i would like a thigh to look like a thigh!

score = 8 nice color, might be a tad too saucy

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice looking box except for the thick gloppy sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: Lighten waaaaayyyyy up on the sauce...it IS a meat contest after all.

Nice looking entry but a little too much sauce = 8

a 9! Nice arrangement. Even color and look moist. Good spacing. A yummy looking box.

9, good looking bow of meat.

Score/Reasons = 9, pieces are un-naturally round and slightly over sauced, but the picture is making my mouth water. I want to eat these giant chicken meatballs.
Suggestions/Comments = keep pieces more uniform in size. Back row is smaller than front.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

Chicken appears to be over-sauced but otherwise nice even muffins. Piece in upper right has a spot that might change the score in person.

Score/Reasons = 7, a bit dark image, but also the sauce looks darker than normal--maybe thicker glaze than I would like to see; the "cupping" of the chicken does not appeal to me--the cooked/smoked chicken looks manufactured.

8 color dark and sizing could be better

Score 9
6 perfect muffin cup chicken. The sauce is not too thick and very shiny. They look very appetizing.

I give this one a 9. Very uniform in color and size. The pic is a little dark which I think makes the chicken look a little dark.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, Sauce is too heavy and dark to see the meat. Nice box otherwise.

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges do not prefer the cupcake chicken style and should not judge down for that - but some will

Tiffany KCBS CBJ-CTC

9 - I'm not a fan of chicken that looks like apples - but the color and even saucing sure makes up for that.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks almost oversauced and some pieces are unevenly sauced, but not enough to take a point away.

Suggestions/Comments = I'm not a fan of Christmas ornament chicken balls, but I won't deduct for this presentation.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
3/12/2014 02:14:06 am

Chicken balls are of equal size, are sauced well but are too dark for me.
Very good 8.

9....Good deep color. Nice shine on sauce. Even sized pieces.

Close the space between the rows to eliminate the big row of green.

Score = 9; Great color on this chicken. Looks very appetizing.

Comments: I'm sure there will be lots of comment about the unnatural shape of muffin pan chicken, so I won't comment on that. The sauce for me is almost too heavy.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice color, not over sauced, good layout,t and prep.

Suggestion: Be careful with parsley covering any meat.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 7. Again, formed chicken that looks more like meatballs than chicken? Also the meat/sauce is too dark and too heavy.

Ernie KCBS/CTC

9 - Uniform and even. Nice looking box

GregG KCBS/MCBJ

9 - Uniform shape and size. Well trimmed and appear moist. Possibly a pinch too much sauce. A lot of work went into this box.

Anita - MCBJ/KCBS

9 - beautiful box. Entries uniform in size. Great mahogany color for sauce. Would definitely like to taste this entry.

8 - nice presentation, even sizes. I would recommend less sauce and pieces that look like chicken.

score/reason 9 sauce helps make it look moist and yet does not look overloaded with sauce

9 Good color on all the pieces. Like the size of the chicken.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
