BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Suggestions/Comments

Play with the arrangement, different placement and maybe a 9.

Brad KCBS/CBJ

9 pieces are uniform, good color

a couple pieces look darker than the rest, it could be the lighting

7 - Sauce is uneven. Poorly arranged. Looks like flecks of carbon from the grate are on it.

8 - Nice color, size is off. I'm not a big fan of muffin pan chicken.

8 other than varying sizes which may be camera angle and the fact that i am not sure what type of meat it is (ok, it probably is thigh meat!), looks worthy of tasting.

7-arrangement not very good may-be was dropped

Score/Reasons: 7 - Is this really chicken? The only way a judge would know is because someone said so. Ok, let's stipulate it is chicken, the color is good and sauced, but not heavily so. The pieces are not uniformly trimmed therefore some are different in size. The middle piece in the front row appears to be one of the smallest in the box. Why aren't the remaining pieces all trimmed to THAT size so that all are equal?

Suggestions/Comments: Trim chicken so that it still looks recognizable as chicken.

a 9! A unique and original layout. Good spacing. They are moist looking and have even color. The middle center sample is smaller as is the back row but because they are placed where they are they all form part of a pattern and so the box cannot be downgraded in my system of judging. Well done.

I would have cutback on the number of pieces to have more uniform sizes, 7.

Score/Reasons = 8, too many pieces, you had 6 nice uniform pieces you could have left out the back exterior pieces.

I love the color on this chicken and it's not over-sauced. Not a fan of muffins but these look tasty.

Score 9
This cook is very proud of his/her muffin pan chicken, 8 pieces. Not too much glaze on them either. They are very shiny and appealing to the eye. .

I give this one a 9. Good even sizes, little color variation, but not much. Shadow throws off the pic a little.

Score/Reasons = 9, maybe 8 in person. Coloring looks a bit light but may be the picture. Nice light saucing on these.

Suggestions/Comments = None

Score/Reasons = 8, uneven saucing and coloration.

Suggestions/Comments = I'm not a fan of Christmas ornament chicken, but I'm not taking off for the shape.

If your going to give me art deco chicken then you better make sure they are the best you can make. The variuos sizes presented are not excellent. However, color, texture, and saucing are indeed excellent. So 7 + 9 = 16/2 = very good 8

8....Color a little light. Looks under cooked. Back row pieces look smaller.

Caramelize the sauce . 9 pieces would probably fill the box better.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ-CTC

8 - the saucing looks a little uneven and the skin underneath looks pale. It didn't affect my score, but I don't like the look of 'cupcake' chicken.

8 - good color but it appears the ones near the back are smaller, may just be the photo angle.

8 - Well trimmed. Slight variation in size. Sauced a little unevenly.
Nice box.

I would score this box a 9. Looks great minus the shadow in the pic.
Suggestion: The chicked could use a little more time in the smoker for a small amount of color.

joe

7 - The shadow masks the front pieces. The chicken balls are even in size but are very different in color. I prefer chicken that looks like chicken.

9 I like the color of the chicken. The skin doesn't look burnt.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
