BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 great looking box symmetrical and good color the only thing I see is a little thickness and a couple of the thighs closest

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 7. This is the best score I can give to formed, over sauced chicken.

Score = 8

Even sized pieces but a little too much sauce.

Alissa

9 = meat looks great! Looks like I would LOVE a bite.

I did notice (and NOT scoring for it, cause we all know NOT to score the garnish) that the parsley is a bit dry and in places is a little lighter green and starting to curl up... just observation :)

Score/Reasons: 9 - Nice box. Good color, nicely trimmed, nicely sauced but not over-sauced, good layout in the box.

Suggestions/Comments: I wouldn't change a thing.

Score/Reasons = 9/Great color, nice shape, looks delicious!

Comments = The "shiny" appearance says "too much sauce" to me. Be careful about how much sauce you put on the chicken.

bruce nickels

Score/Reasons = 8, slightly over-sauced, pieces not uniform in size.Lots of large specs in seasoning. Could be a 9.

9 - Great color, Nice trim and sample uniformity.

Score/Reasons = 8, maybe 9 in person, might be the photo, but the sauce and coloration looks uneven, still looks mighty appetizing!

Suggestions/Comments = Parsley bed looks GREAT!!! Framed perfectly! could trim the thighs a wee bit more to make them look more similar, but that is very picky and not a scoring point as it is.

Score = 9: Great looking chicken. Sauce/color looks tiny bit uneven in spots, but not enough to bring the score down.

Nice glaze, similar sizes yada,yada,yada.
Seen this same box a hundred times. Show us something new & exciting.
However you did so with excellence so I'm required to give you a 9.
So why change?

9!!! Great box. Even color, look moist, good layout and arrangement. The two smaller ones are in the middle so make a distinct pattern.

A superb turn in box with excellent conformity of pieces. The color and glaze on each piece are near perfection. I'm not one for garnish, but here it works beautifully with just the right amount to make the chicken stand out. If there is ever a 10, this would be it.

9- Great color and shine. The samples are all uniform in size and the trimming looks to be neat and clean.

Any more sauce/glaze might be too much.

Score/Reasons = 8, the meat is just a bit too red. I like natural looking meat. Also, I feel there is just a little too much sauce

Suggestions/Comments = use a less red sauce or use less of it to allow the meat to show through.

Jason CBJ/CSBBQA

Score/Reasons - High 8, only critique is glaze does not look uniform left side looks heavier than right, especially the middle piece. The 2 bottom thighs look bigger than the others but that could be a pattern.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
