BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

I would give this one a 9. Very good assortment of items, would love to taste.

Score 8. Looks to be a gr4eat chicken entry. I do not understand why the cook chose to only sauce the slices and not all of the entry.

9 looks moist and tasty.

Chicken does not look inviting at all. Sauce on the slices looks out of place.

8 - would like a little color, otherwise very nice.

Score/Reasons: 8 - good color, nice presentation, good layout, sauced but not overly so.

Suggestions/Comments: Tidy up the presentation of the pulled meat.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons = 7/Unique presentation is a little unorthodox, but doneness of the medallions in the center is questionable. The sauce on the medallions is unappealing.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks juicy. nice pieces. sauce looks like gravy.

Suggestions/Comments = not your typical chicken box, but nice presentation.

9 - Very appealing, great color. Can't wait to try it.

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist and I like the two different types in the box, but the color of the MM is unapealing to me.

Suggestions/Comments = Would like to see some bark in the box (not a scoring point without bark [we are to judge "as presented"], but box would look better and more complete).

Score 9
Very interesting presentation. With the pulled chicken on the sides and nice slices going soen the middle. No too much sauce but the chicken is shiny and good enough to eat

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
4/3/2014 01:34:50 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Like the different presentation, nice looking box. More color on the skin of the medallions would move this to a 9. The skin looks a bit rubbery and not quite appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = none.

9......The white meat look moist and tender. The box shows a lot of work went into the presentation. The rolled chicken down the center is different but nicely presented.

I'm not sure if the center row is stuffed or that just the way it looks. The front piece looks strange. May be DQ

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8: Meat looks a little pale, bland and monochromatic.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Holy Cow!! What's that? 8" long rolled breast?
Anyway it looks tasty, which is the goal right?
Nice big chunks of pulled, lightly sauced slices.
Anything less than excellent 9's would be criminal.

8. Good color, nice arrangement. Look moist. However, the top right edges are random while the lower left corner has meat placed parallel to the edges.

comment - I like that this chicken was done two ways, that is not the average technique . most are thighs, and tend to be messy eating
this looks to be more manageable . GOOD JOB

A unique display presentation from what we usually see in competition boxes. The meat looks great and tasty with good color and just the right amount of glaze. I would give it a 7, but don't think this is what most judges would want to see.

9- Good looking box. Meat looks juicy, nice shine and nice presentation.

Comment: I like the different presentation style, a little pulled and some slices. I think stepping away from the norm (thigh) might add some to a score.

Suggestions/Comments = Good for you turning in all white meat. Looks great.

Score/Reasons = 9, at first glance, the meat looks like pork. like the presentation of the white meat and the sliced thighs.

Suggestions/Comments = The pile of white meat at the upper right appears to have less meat than the bottom left. Make sure the size of the piles are more even.

Score/Reason: 6. This does not look appealing to me. Kudos for trying something different but I think it's a swing and a miss. The pulled pieces look okay but there is a hole/gap in the top section on the right. The biggest turn-off is the slices though, kinda ruins it for me.

I had to re-read this to make sure it wasn't a pitiful pork entry. Interesting and unusual display. Not un-appetizing, but very different... Could use more color perhaps...

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
