BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

This is too much chicken for this box, looks over crowded. The color is ice, but l would like to see more work to get the sizes closer, I give this one an 8.

Hank

Score= 8

Sauce looks uneven . Not sold on 9 pieces of same cut appears any better than 6.

8 - Trim skin on upper right and center pieces.

8 - Nice box. Color is even and does not appear to be overly sauced. A couple of trimming issues, but fairly uniform in size.

9 like the color, size

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
5/11/2014 02:21:17 am

Score 8. More is not always better. This box looks crowded and by placing nine pieces in the box it allows for a judge to compare more pieces, Not a necessary risk.

9......Nice even color. Light sauce with a shine. Chicken looks moist.

Box to crowded. The front row hanging over the edge of the box should have turned on a light.

Score = 9

This is a very well presented box of chicken! I can't tell what the fleck on the upper left piece is but otherwise I would love to sample this presentation!

7 - too much sauce

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 8; Middle piece has small flap of skin sticking out on lower right hand corner. Pieces could be trimmed to be a little more uniform. Sauce looks too heavy and somewhat uneven. Color is uneven. These are very minor details, fix them and the box should be a 9 all day long.

score / reason 7 uneven sizes, gloppy sauce, skin tags on some of the pieces, nice color and shine, box is not an official turn in box that i have seen would definitely call attention to the rep and table captain might be a dq ?

Score/Reasons = 8, chicken looks a little under.Chicken on bottom left looks perfect, other look to have a rubbery skin and not crispy.

Suggestions/Comments = don't over stuff the box.

9??? Pieces look good, nice color. My question is: Can you close the lid? If not, rearrange the pieces so you can or leave some of them out.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
5/12/2014 02:12:04 am

This might be a case of too much of a..thing. By having that many pieces it highlights the differences. Sauce application is pretty good.
Above average 7, might talk myself into a very goos 8.
Never seen a black box, certainly not KCBS.

Score/Reasons = 8, may be a 9 in person; sauce appears too heavy in spots.

Suggestions/Comments = The table captain will be happy, but the box is too crowded. Some judges will mark down for this.

an 8. Good layout, even color and look moist. However the lower right piece is more triangular than rectangular. If it had been rotated 180 degrees it would have been a mirror image to the upper left one ( and therefore part of a pattern) and I would have scored it higher.

Ernie

9 - Good looking box

Score/Reasons = 8, color is too orange, but that might just be the photo, uneven coloration, bits of something on the tops of a couple thighs (left middle, center middle, center top).

Suggestions/Comments = six thighs would have made the box look MUCH better (not a scoring point) - pick out the best, most similar 6.

8 - WOW ! Way to fill up a box. Although samples look moist and delicious, they are not uniform in size or trimmed to look the same.

I suggest you pick out the best 6 samples you can get that are the same size and appearance and use those. The rest looked very good.

8 Chicken looks great. A suggestion would be to concentrate on the details of trimming and placing the meat in the box.

Eric - Master CBJ/KCBS
5/13/2014 12:40:01 am

Score/Reasons = 8; looks nice; evenly sauced; size could be more uniform

Suggestions/Comments = like nine entries (remember the TC and volunteers!); trim the skin so it doesn't hang off the piece (middle piece); try to fit all items in the box so your parsley frame goes all the way around the entry

Score/Reasons = 7, there are simply too many thighs in this box which makes the box crowded. The sauce is also applied unevenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Apply sauce more evenly. Also, place less meat in the box. In this case less is more.

This is a confident cook. 9 Pieces of very good looking chicken. Not too much sauce. With the exception of a few minor details, I'd give this box a 9

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8, maybe a 9 in person - looks moist, full box, work on trimming to uniform shape and size

Suggestions/Comments = none

Bobby Whitefield

Nice uniform, well cooked pieces with good color. Only criticism is the box is overfilled. An 8.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score/Reasons: 9; Good looking chicken.

Suggestions/Comments: Just an observation- While I am sure the Table Captain appreciates the addition of additional thighs, it does make for a very crowded box. I have to wonder how they got the box closed for turn in!

Bob CBJ/KCBS
5/16/2014 01:19:33 am

Score 8 Nice color and uniform sizes. Box is overcrowded.

Recommend: Maybe last row could be only two samples and turned sideways, otherwise 6 samples more centered.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
