I would request the Table Captain to get a Contest Rep ruling. The large onion pieces are illegal garnish and the entry should be disqualified.

This looks more like an Italian dish than BBQ. DQ'ed, pieces are to large in the sauce. By KCBS rules.

8 - Overall a very nice presentation, good color of the product and a nice sheen from the sauce. However, the garnish extends a tiny bit beyond the confines of the lower section and maybe beyond the box. Not a big deduction, could have happened in transport from the turn-in table? Also the chunks in the sauce appear bigger than the allowed 1/8" - something to look at for the cook. Good job overall.

I like the look, however, I would have to call the Rep over and have them look at the sauce. I believe that it is in violation of Rule 13 of the KCBS Rules and Regulations therefore getting a score of 1 for appearance.

Score/reasons = 6/While the meat looks tasty, it also looks like fried chicken nuggets. It's so covered by whatever that is on it that I can't tell for sure that it's even chicken.

A DQ in my BBQ association - foreign object in box. The meat is covered in sauce and ONIONS! This is a meat competition not an onion or sauce event. The pieces are of different sizes. Layout is OK. Not appealing.

Score = 1 DQ, from KCBS Rules #14: "Chunks are to be no larger than a fine dice approximately 1/8 inch cubed. Sauce violations will receive a one(1) in appearance." I see several chunks in the sauce that are larger than 1/8 inch cubed.

Score/Reasons: Would have to see this box in person, but very probably the appearance score for this box is a 1. KCSB Rule #13, for sauce...in pertinent part: "...Chunky sauce will be allowed. Chunks are to be no larger than a fine dice, approximately 1/8 inch cubed. Sauce violations shall receive a score of one (1) on Appearance." I know the rule says "cubed." And I can see the that the pieces are not cubed, per se, but they DO appear to be very large when scaled against the size of the chicken pieces.

According to KCBS rule 14, I would have to give you a 1 on appearance. If you choose to use chunky sauce, the chunks of are required to a fine dice no larger than 1/8 inch. Even if chunks were allowed, I personally don't care for the appearance as it looks like it was taken from a chinese buffet, not a smoked BBQ competition. If your sauce is really a flavor profile that you think will win over the taste of the judges, try dicing smaller and lighten up on the sauce a little bit. It looks over sauced. Although not judging the garnish, you should try to balance the parsley and lettuce evenly in the box. It looks like it was rushed to finish it.

6 - This is the type of box that gives me trouble. I always like to give credit to cooks who try something different but I'm not sure what this box is trying to accomplish. Trying to get past the sauce the individual pieces don't look very uniform or appetizing. Not sure what this would taste like. I definitely would like to see this box in person.

1 - DISQUALIFIED! 1/8 inch chunk in sauce KCBS rule. Looks tasty, good placement, odd garnish mix. Almost looks like the bird was battered and then sauced ??? 7/16/2014 09:40:45 am

6- I really hate to give that score because it looks as if you spent a lot of time on this box. There is too much sauce, and the onion is hiding the chicken. Skin looks rubbery, and the color looks off. Also, the two different garnishes are detracting from the appearance of box.

Well then, I see a DQ, pieces of onion in the sauce are easily bigger than 1/8". Besides being buried in that green stuff, the pieces are all but unidentifiable, and look like they are covered by some gravy.

Score/Reasons: 6; However, I'm afraid this might be a DQ due to the large chunks of what appears to be onion in the sauce. Reason: it looks like there wasn't a great deal of care taken in either cooking the chicken or assembling the box and displaying the meat. The chicken has an orange-y color that is rather off-putting.

Score/Reasons = 5, just does not look appetizing. I gave it a five, but in a contest, this box would be DQ'd because of, what looks like onions, which are present. The objects are considered foreign object because they are large than 1/8 inch.

Score/Reasons = This will most likely end up being changed to a 1 after I record a score of 7, wait until everyone records their score, and then request that the TC contact the Contest Rep. Chunky sauce is allowed but must be a fine dice, about 1/8 of an inch cubes. I might also request a confirmation of the "veiny" garnish used on the left and right sides of the box.

1. I know we are not supposed to look at the greenery, however this greenery is very distracting to me. I would have a hard time giving a good appearance score because of the greenery. By KCBS rules this one would be DQ'd. Chunks of onion in the sauce are too large. Onion set aside, I'd probably give it a 3. Sloppy looking. Pieces not uniform in size. And I know we're not supposed to judge garnish but that garnish looks like what was left in the bottom of the bag.

1- While nice looking, via KCBS rules the chunky sauce would prompt the REP to invoke rule 13 "Chunky sauce will be allowed. Chunks are to be no larger than a fine dice, approximately 1/8 inch cubed. Sauce violations shall receive a score of one (1) on Appearance."

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
