BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons = 8, great looking box. a touch over sauced, garnish looks off

Suggestions/Comments = fix garnish

Ike, KCBS

Score = 9.

Even sized pieces, good arrangement and not too much sauce.

Good job!

Score/Reasons: 9; Meat appears moist and well cooked.

Suggestions/Comments: There may be those judges who will score down for the amount of sauce, so I'd be cautious about adding any more, but to me, this looks like a winning entry. Good job!

Score=9

Looks nice maybe a tad bit too dark and a little over sauced "goopy"

Mike Cannon

7 - too much empty space in box. Meat looks dry/overdone.

Wow it looks amazing 27

Score/Reasons = 7 (possibly an 8 in person). I like the sizing and the slightly skewed arrangement of the thighs. The sauce has a nice color, but is too thick, even to the point of having noticeable brush marks/sags on some of the pieces.

Comments - Although not considered for scoring purposes, the flat leaf parsley in this box is distracting and is not showing off the meat as well as it would if it was more uniform or neutral so to speak. If you opt for garnish, focus on an arrangement that keeps my eyes on the meat.

7....Blotchy sauce. Looks over cooked and dry. Matching size.

Need more pieces in the box for that size thigh's. Spend some time to do the garnish right.

Your garnish of large leaf Italian parsley (I beleive) is legal and as such will play no part in my judging for appearance. However, gobs of sauce on it will.
Nice layout of chicken, piece size is very good. Sauce application is over thick and sloppy.
I'm in for a average 6.

8 - The chicken skin looks puckered/wrinkly which leads me to believe it will be tough. This could also be just a wave in the sauce - but it's hard to tell.

Score = 8, Color and sauce is uneven.

Vern - KCBS MCBJ
2/17/2015 04:28:41 am

8 - Globs of sauce. Glaze needs to be even and not spotty...

Larry MCBJ
2/17/2015 04:29:02 am

7 - Uneven sauce, wrinkled skin, extra sauce all over garnish.

JohnnyY
2/17/2015 06:14:17 am

Score - 7
Reason - Appears over sauce and a cleaner presentation would increase score.

Suggestion/Comment - The wrinkle skin maybe due to over cooking and detracts from appearance. Try to improve finished product

Score/Reasons: 8. The box is legal but it lacks "pop." I like the color and that the pieces are not oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments: There's lots of unused space in that box. Consider using larger pieces or more pieces...like maybe 9 pieces. A more full box makes for a better appearance.

Score/Reasons = 7, potentially a nice looking tray, but a few of the pieces look rippled. I haven't seen that before.

Suggestions/Comments = Keep the layout. Fix whatever caused the ripples on 3 or more of the pieces.

Score: 8

Good color, but brush marks and uneven saucing prevents a better score.

9- Great looking cupcake chicken box, garnish frames well, great color, finishing glaze gives a moist appearance. Would like to have a bite right now.

8 - Good color, interesting placement, but a little oversauced. Good looking entry!

Score = 7. Box looks like it was thrown together in a hurry. If you are going to use garnish, it should be neatly arranged. I know garnish isn't judged, but you use it to balance the meat and make it present well to the judge. The sauce is not even on the chicken, actually looking clumpy. To improve appearance score, I would have removed the long strand of parsley on the upper right of box and you could try dipping the thigh in the sauce, so the excess comes one of the sides, possibly thinning it just a bit or heating the sauce to thin it before applying.

8. Looks great! You might want to cut back a little on the sauce though.

Score/Reasons = 7, Meat looks a little dry and the skin looks a bit wrinkled. This possible could be due to the meat sitting out and not due to cooking.

Suggestions/Comments = If the meat was sitting out, keep it in a cooler until the very last minute.

Score/Reasons = 8, the thighs look very good, but are missing that WOW factor for a 9. Skin, sauce, and coloration are not even on all thighs.

Suggestions/Comments = place the chicken on top of the garnish so that no garnish covers any part of the chicken, and even up the garnish to evenly frame the meat. (NOT a scoring factor)

8, nice color

Jean - MBJ

7 - lot going on here. Brush marks on sauce of chicken.
Chicken looks like it was placed haphazardly into the box.
I know we are not to look at the greenery, however, if you are going to use it it needs to be placed neatly in the box, this greenly takes away from the overall appearance of the box.

I don't downgrade for any crazy reasons like too much sauce, not big enough thighs, or seeing stems on the parsley; none of those are reasons under current KCBS standards to downgrade. 9.

Score 9 Nice uniform samples. Not over sauced. Very appetizing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
