BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

I would give this entry an 8 in appearance.

Score: 9

Looks nicely presented and meat looks moist. Only suggestion is to try and get the rub distributed evenly over the chicken. Nicely job!

Mike van Leeuwen

Score: 8

Comments: looks appealing, but I would recommend using a more shiny glaze and a finer rub. Looks a little bit lumpy.

Rick

This box is a 9. Nice color and looks good enough to eat.

2/28/2015 11:14:07 pm

I would give this an 8 the sauce and rub look lumpy Good color and glaze of the sauce is right on

Wayne KCBS/CBJ
3/1/2015 01:04:53 am

Score/Reasons = 7. Judges would have to be standing to get a full "top view" of a box (and a few do). That said, this perspective really shows the inconsistency in both sizing and color.

Comments - Uniformity (not necessarily to the degree of cloning) is always a good start in appearance scoring.

Score 9 The pieces are fairly even, pretty color and look very inviting to taste. Not too much sauce either.

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score / reason nice strong 8, looks a little splotchy on the sauce other than that it looks great

Pete KCBS
3/1/2015 03:52:17 am

Score: 9. Beautiful thighs, nice arrangement, and love the color, reminds me of that beautiful mustard-based bbq which is so under-appreciated.

8

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC
3/1/2015 06:36:16 am

Score/reasons: 8. Could have been a 7 or 9.

Suggestions/Comments: The photo had too much flashback to evaluate the meat.

Score/Reasons: 9 - nicely trimmed, nice color, beautifully presented chicken thighs.

Suggestions/Comments: Thank you to the Pitmaster for not succumbing to the cupcake/muffin tin, lollipop, over-sauced fad. I wouldn't change a thing.

Score/Reasons = 9, nice coloring, layout and size. Can't wait to taste.

Suggestions/Comments = Someone finally found the magical chicken with 6 thighs.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ, CTC

8 - Nice looking chicken. Color is a little mottled, it may uneven sauce or uneven cooking, or just the photo.

Hank KCBS/CBJ

Score= 8

Sauce appears uneven

I would give this one a 9, like the color and the shape. Really would like to taste that one.

Score = 9

Even sized pieces and just enough sauce to enhance the chicken....good job!!!

Score/Reasons = 8, looks moist, but either skin pull-back or sauce is not evenly coating all pieces. Not crazy about the speckled appearance.

Suggestions/Comments = I liked that the pieces were size matched to have similar sizes next to each other! (not a scoring factor, but helps the box to look nicer)

Jim - CBJ SBN/KCBS
3/2/2015 04:59:58 am

Score/Reasons = 9, The presentation is nice and even, making the chicken stand out; the skin looks like it could be bitten through and the color is nice.

Score/Reasons = 9, Look good. I like the color and glaze which does not appear to be too much. Only things, the bottom thighs are not touching like the two top rows. Also, the garnish is not totally covering the box, white is showing through. These are very minor,

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure the thighs are place the same and, if garnish is used, make sure it covers all of the bottom of the box. Good job

Larry MCBJ

6 - Spotty sauce, grainy appearance, nothing special.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/2/2015 04:06:12 pm

Score 9. Not a great picture, but the chicken still looks great. Not oversauced and I'm sure the color would be much better than the picture show.

Damon Ballard

8 (8.5 if I could give it), nice looking box, really nice, just not a 9. Try to get the pieces more even: in "brown-ness" as well as "symmetricallity." Could use a little more parsley in the corners as well. None of this is reason to downgrade, but they are subconsciously reasons to upgrade.

9. Looks great!

8.......Front left thigh is smaller in size. Blotchy sauce. Good color and shine.

Trim the nubs off the corners.

Great looking entry, no reason to not give it a excellent 9.

Score 9 nice color, skin almost looks crispy. I want to taste this.

Doyle KCBS CMJ/CTC

8 - nice color but too spotty, pieces need to be more uniform

Rick KCBS CBJ,CTC
3/17/2015 04:39:44 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Box is nice and full. Thighs look to be plump and moist with a nice uniform size and color. Sauce is splotchy in places.

Suggestions/Comments = Apply sauce evenly to all pieces. Overall, very nice presentation. I would enjoy sampling this box!

Note: I assume the white "spots" were caused by the camera flash and don't actually appear on the chicken.

Keith Cochran KCBS CBJ

8, looks good, color kind of splotchy.

Art KCBS/CBJ
4/7/2015 06:14:41 pm

Score/Reasons = 8. Good looking chicken. Looks moist. Not sure if it's the photo flash but the bottom pieces don't appear to be sauced as consistently as the top pieces. Only reason I didn't give it a 9.

william holladay (scba)

9= pieces are uniform, appear to be moist, not over-sauced and presented well.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
