BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 -- looks too saucy

George

It looks like it is oversauced. I would give it an 8.

Ike KCBS CBJ

Score = 8.

A little too much sauce and pieces are uniform.

Score/Reasons = 7, looks over sauced and shape is very irregular between samples.

Art KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons= 8 Great color and looks appetizing, but the smaller piece in the lower right corner distracts a little. Also, some pieces touching each other and some not. Very good box overall.

Suggestions/Comments= Strive for uniformity in size and placement of pieces.

Nothing I can really put my finger on but just doesn't look like a 9

7 - Symmetry off, over-sauced, and no wow factor..

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MIM & MBN Judge
4/29/2015 10:03:22 am

Score/Reasons: 8 - Great color, nicely presented. Too much gloppy sauce and sauce covers only the tops but, if one looks carefully, the sides have little-to-no sauce.

Comments/Suggestions: Lighten up on the sauce (more is not better) and sauce all of the piece, not just the top.

Wayne KCBS / CBJ
4/29/2015 10:05:00 am

Score / Reasons = 9. Wow. This is one excellent box. I appreciate the "natural" shape of the thighs, the arrangement, and think the color is very appealing. I only see a couple of sags in the sauce and they are not enough to prevent a 9. They all look so good, I would not even mind being in the number 6 chair, but would love to be in the number 1 chair!!

Comments: The photo is very life-like, has good lighting and you took the shot from the perspective of the judges... this helps a lot when judging appearance from a photograph. Your trimming, shaping and skin tucking skills are polished. You did a great job when selecting the 4 corner pieces as they form nice lines on the sides as well as along the front and rear.

Score/Reasons= 7 Good layout, pieces look fairly uniform in size and shape. Sauce is too heavy and uneven on the pieces making them difficult to see.

Score=9

Arrangement looks nice. Maybe uniform sized thighs others would agree this is a 9.

9 - Excellent looking chicken box .

Suggestion - Sauce may be tad too thick for some judges. Show me those thighs!

Score/Reasons = 8,meat looks great. Good color. Just a touch too much sauce

Suggestions/Comments = Less sauce. More garnish. Pieces are not same size. Back left piece looks best. Good box. Could be a 9 in person.

I think this one has too much sauce on it. I would give it a 7. Also it looks like the pieces at the front vary in size.

8. The meat looks nice but it is taken back by the heavy sauce. It would have helped your score to trim pieces more evenly.

Score/Reasons = 9, even coloration and saucing

Suggestions/Comments = Some judges may consider this oversauced, but that is a preconceived personal preference and should NOT be a criteria for scoring. I like to see the thighs more uniform in size and shape, but that too is personal preference and should not be a scoring factor.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Nice color, sauce looks even on all the pieces.

Comments: There is almost too much sauce, but not enough to bring the score down.

Score 8. Looks like this could be an excellent entry EXCEPT for the heavy amount of sauce. One point deducted due to the over saucing.

I would judge this an 8. Inviting but a bit uneven

Score: 9

Nice contrast between the chicken and garnish. Really makes the meat pop. I also see the smoke (lower left piece) so, I would be looking forward to sampling. Nice job!

Score/Reasons = 7, way too much sauce which, to me, does not make it look appetizing at all. One can taste only the sauce and not the actually meat.

Suggestions/Comments = use less sauce. Maybe think of using the sauce as a condiment as one would us ketchup or mustard. The

Score 7. Extremely saucy, gonna take a lot of work not to get sauce all over my scorecard. Pieces don't have to be identical but there are some pretty big differences in the size of these pieces.

Everything looks great…..but they look a little wet. I'm an 8 on appearance

william holladay (SCBA)

8= pretty good looking box, but pieces are over-sauced and the front left and center pieces look larger than the rest. would still love to dig in.

7 - too much bbq glaze on chicken and pieces are not uniform in shape and size.

Not uniform in sizes. Over sauced, making it difficult to actually evaluate.

7... Nice color. Thighs not uniform in size. No pop to the box.

Sauce looks a little heavy.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Pretty saucey looking, I'm afraid most of what I'd taste is your sauce.
Not very reminiscent of a chicken thigh...
Thus a above average score of 7

Susan Hanson

Meat looks appealing, moist and appetizing. I would be eager to try this chicken. This type of garnish is a good accent to this presentation.

Appearance 9- Very uniform box of chix, good looking glaze, very appetizing.

Glenn KCBS CBJ CTC

8 - very good looking box. Seems to be the right amount of sauce. Very appetizing looking. Would probably be a 9 if the sizes of the chicken were a little more uniform.

Give it an 8. Beautiful looking thighs, but a little over sauced, and look under cooked.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
