Solid 8.5,, wish we could do that.

I dont judge much on garnish unless it gets in my way... that is alot of meat.. some of the largest hunks I have seen.
I dont like the garnish down the middle or on the right side hiding the meat and preventing an easy grip.

I guess I just have a problem with unnaturally shaped thighs. Square thighs? There are inconsistant shapes in the box with the upper right thigh appearing square and the lower left thigh appearing round with the other thighs appearing to be some variable in between those two shapes.
Also, there appears to be a gloppy sauce issue, or not enough skin to cover some of the thighs.

Garnish gets in the way of the chix. Too much! Distracts from the finished product.

Beef with me ..... when do you see evenly square chix thighs, or any other part of a chix thats equal to another? Seems people downgrade cause the thighs aren't perfectly the same.

Overall very nice box. There are a few little things that keep it from a 9 for me. Appearance to me should be a product placed in the box as symmetrically as possible, and, be the main focus. The frame of the picture, afterall this is a picture we are looking at, should be straight.

Nice effort!

I'd give it an 8. Good size portions of meat, consistent color and sauce, but a little too much garnish, at least as it looks from the picture.

Score 7 The meat is oversauced and this usually is done to hide flaws in the meat. Skin is much better on the thighs on the right side of the box. Also too much parsley in the center of the box which is hiding part of the meat.

Score = 8

Meat is a little buried in parsley making it hard to see all the pieces. Need to get your meat above the garnish to showcase the chicken.

Sauce looks a little heavy in areas (might just be the photo). Other than that, I'd like to taste test this chicken. :-)

9 from me

Geesh you guys, are you judging BBQ or masterpiece oil paintings. If oyu read the KCBS instruction, you are supposed to be judging the meat, and certainly not how it is framed in a photo.

If the meat appears to have had not enough effort in placement, then one might score down, but they tell you in judges class and before each event to judge the meat. If it doesn't look appealing for some reason, then don't score it up, but parsley placement...c'mon. there would never be any 180 with some of the stuff being said here.

OK, off rant now. sorry. I have had too many great turn ins ruined by stuff like I am hearing here. Guess I'm a bit touchy.

BBQCRITIC.COM OFFICIAL SCORE = 8

This box was in a real contest:
Actual Judge Scores = 9,9,8,8,9,9
Average Score = 8.6

BBQ Critic Online Judge Scores = 9 7 8 8 8 7 8 9 9
BBQ Critic Online Judge Average Score = 8.1

Overall Judging was very close to the real-life contest

JUDGING:
-------------
Major discrepancies on mention of GARNISH. In summary, no one judged garnish. The mention of garnish was for reasons of OBSTRUCTION (covering parts of the meat to be judged). Cooks should be mindful to keep meat the center focus in the box. Make sure judges can clearly see as much of the meat as possible or risk losing points for having too much garnish which may hide parts of the meat to be judged. In a real-life contest, judges may also be suspicious cooks are trying to hide something when too much garnish is covering the meat.

TRIMMING:
---------------
Cooks should also be aware there are two types of judges. Those who like perfectly trimmed meat and others who prefer a more natural look. This issue is worthy of discussion in the BBQ Critic forum.

COMPLAINTS:
------------------
One judge asked if we are judging BBQ or Masterpiece Oil Paintings? Strangely enough, some Grand Champion cooks have referred to their competition boxes as a Mona Lisa: "The Mona Lisa is a beautiful painting. Take that frame away from it, um, it looks good but... We look at the garnish as putting a beautiful frame around the meat. You don't want to lose a fraction of a point anywhere including on appearance. You eat with your eyes first. It's human nature.” (SMOKIN' SCOTSMEN - Reference: BBQ Yearbook).

While judges are not supposed to judge the appearance of garnish, often times a beautifully built box will compliment the meat and leave no question in the mind of judge when the meat is EXCELLENT in appearance. We advise cooks to take no chances. Make everything as perfect as possible in your competition box. DO NOT MAKE A JUDGE THINK!

FEEDBACK TO COOK:
-------------------------------
The meat looks appetizing and just needs a little more attention to detail (per judge comments). Keep sauce evenly applied, garnish from "obstructing" the meat so judges can judge the meat. Decide in your mind how you really want your chicken to look in terms of "shape." Trim to perfection or a natural look? The choice in yours.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
