Great color! If the pieces were a little more even in size and shape it would be an easy 9.

8, the thighs color and saucing is uneven and that makes me as a judge want to be on one of the ends so I can get one of the fully sauced pieces.

sauce looks splotchy and size is irregular. Sauce also looks a bit thick.

I dunno, it just doesn't scrfeam out "Eat Me!"

I'd give it a 9. Well balanced, looks tasty.

Score = 8

Reasons = Looks pretty good, but not quite excellent. Sauce doesn't appear to be evenly spread and there are some light spots and dark spots.

Suggestions = fix the above reasons.

I suggest placing all pieces the same direction ie all knuckles up or down.
Trim so all pieces are the same size. If using garnish make it even on the edges like a picture frame.
The positives are that the meat looks appetizing, color is good, sauce/glaze is applied nicely.

8 - Look appetizing, but not a nine appetizing. I'm sure it would have been a nine in person. From the pic it looks like it has a real grainy thick sauce, and I think that is what keeps it from being a nine for me. Most judges would probably score down for larger size piece on the bottom right corner, but I prefer that chicken be not so uniform/processed anyway.

Lower right might be just a bit bigger, but not so much as to reduce the score

Cant say there is anything wrong with this box. However, after judging a few contests, I can say this doesn't quite make the level of a "9" box.

As the scoring description goes, this is a "very good" box, but not quite an "excellent" box.

I went back and forth from an 8 to a 9, then always give benefit of doubt to the cook, so 9 it is.

I happen to like chicken that looks like chicken. The color is very nice. The skin is retaining/holding the sauce unevenly, so you have some redder areas and yellower areas. Otherwise very nice and appetizing chicken entry.

Score = 7

Sauce seems to be a thick honey type of glaze with additional rub sprinkled in and cooked slightly. Glaze seems to be a bit thick and extra rub has a tendency to taste gritty and isn't appealing.

I think I would have given it an 8 if the glaze wasn't so thick and had rub "grit".

Score 8. Nice looking box, but once again the meat is over sauced, which hides the real appeal of the meat. Also the thigh in the center of the bottom row is not as nice and distracts from the other pieces.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

    Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
