Might be the perspective but right-front piece looks much larger that the rest. Uneven pieces, saucing and color.

Good lighting probably added to this score . If I was sure I was gonna be the last judge to pick from this box I might lower my score as the upper left sample looks a little off - but over all it's very appetizing.

The meat is overshadowed by the garnish. The placement of the pieces in the box, although unique is not that pleasing to my eye. Perhaps the larger thigh in the front should be in the back, thus improving the weighting of the box.The far back thigh is too dark to be consistant with the others.

7 - above average. The garnish is distracting and really doesn't enhance the appearance of the meat. The meat is kind of hiding down in it. Bunch of sauce on the front center of the garnish is kind of sloppy. The chicken could use a little more even glaze to it.

Get the color a little more even across the pieces, and get the chicken to sit up higher instead of hiding deep in the box and you have a 9 from me.

If it all looked like the front right piece, I'd give a 9
Too much garnish. (don't see flat leaf parsley very often)
Difference in appearance between front right, bottom left and top left pieces is just to great to give this a higher score. Hope I get first choice. The front right piece looks yummy!!

There's nothing great looking here but nothing really bad either.

Looks pretty good, but needs a bit of improvement to be excellent.
I like the moist look of most pieces; however, not all look the same. The far left piece looks dryer and darker than the rest. I do not like the garnish, as it does NOT make the chicken look any more appetizing! Use the garnish as a platform to raise the meat for presentation.

8 - The presentation definitely needs some work, but I could not help but give this an 8. That chicken has a great color and looks very appetizing. I think the best thing of all is that it looks like a real piece of chicken. I think the garnish detracts from the chicken. Clean up the presentation, and that would be a 9 in my book.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
