Chicken golf balls of various shapes and sizes, crammed into a box. Unappetizing appearance.

The box and it's amazing fullness, and symmetry get a 9 from me. *On a side note, for all the "you need garnish" fans, this box shows you don't.

A hi 7 to low 8, they look crammed in to me and sauce a little gloppy. It also looks like something on top of one of the front thighs like an untrimmed sliver of skin that just got sauced over.

7--maybe 8 in person--looks more like meatballs then chicken from here--not a fan of the overly trimmed thigh--although some do taste good

7 - looks like meatballs to me.

box looks a bit crowded to me with uneven saucing and trim

Nothing wrong here. I guess I'd expect some garnish, but it doesn't diminish from the appearance or "appitizeability" of the meat. I guess that's not a real word.

Score 7. The box looks over crowded and the chicken over sauced. I also think less meat and using a garnish to highlight the chicken would help.

9 - Looks good. Be careful about pooling the sauce.

7 Box has no real "pop" to it and the sauce looks a little thicker than I like. Sweet and Sour Chicken come to mind.

I would score this box a 6 = Average.

The pitmaster's effort to provide uniformity of the pieces combined with a decent no garnish presentation prevented me from scoring it a 5. I would love to have seen this chef just BBQ and sauce some thighs and present them the same.

The reason for the score of "6 or "average" is that in todays world this is (unfortunately) the epitomy of average competition chicken.

I find the size of the chicken extremely unnatural and unappealing. Very much over trimmed.

The skin appears wrinkled and shriveled. It may be bite through or even a bit crispy but it sure doesn;t look like something I want to eat.

Not over sauced or under sauced but uneven sauce once again leaves me with average.

8. Pieces look pretty uniform in size. Sauce may be a little uneven and heavily applied.

Nice uniform pieces but there is something about the 'slimy' appearance that turns me off. Maybe it's the picture.

Good looking stuff and no garnish bothers me not at all. Sauce seems globbed on a little and the skin does not looked browned hardly at all on a few pieces. Pick out the best looking 6 or 8 and it's a 9. Bet this tasted good. Can't wait for next season of judging

8 or 9... benefit of doubt goes to the cook, so 9 it is.

Good lookin' no garnish box. Full of chicken. Good color, nice lookin' glaze. I'm thinkin I'd like to take a bite.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
