I like seeing natural looking chicken and I like the stuff that teams put so much time and effort into to trim perfectly and make look uniform. This box is a little of both. Big variance in trim and skin adhesion. Sauce is somewhat uneven. Middle piece on right is way smaller than the rest. Have to give a generous 7 if these are the best looking six out of what they prepared.
Mighta got a 9 for taste/tenderness though!!

7, might be 8 when seen in person. Nice shine and color!

Why did you put the middle piece on the right in the box? Really hurt your score( unpleasant in appearance, my eyes went to it 1st), try to make sure you cook enough pieces to only put your BEST in the box. Maybe it's just finger smudges that could be touched up?

I would give this box a 6. The pieces are different shapes and sizes, the saucing varies by piece, and there appears to be bits of soot or grate debris.

strong 8, weak 9, garnish could be filled in better, the pieces are not all the same size, sauce is not even.

7. Nothing outstanding here, good solid box. Chicken looks like chicken, trim a little better to even the sizes, wrap the skin all the way around (see upper right corner piece), evenly apply sauce (see right column, left side of the middle piece).

7. Sauce looks messy, pieces are uneven. Overall it has a nice color, though which brings it up from a 6.

8 - Very Good

Inconsistent size and shape. Sauce unevenly applied. Top right entry skin does not cover thigh.

Not judged, but worth a comment. Your garnish looks well on the way to dead.

7 Meat and sauce look like they would be very tasty, and there is a nice shine on it.

Pieces are uneven is shape and size, and placement in the box is lopsided.

I suggest you keep your recipe and process if you are getting good taste scores, but work on trimming and placement. You might want to try cooking more thighs so that you have a better chance of finding similar pieces.

Overal looks delicious and inviting. sauce is heavy
Would prefer more consistent sizing
Looks like real chicken!
Careful with details like the skin
on the corner of the right center piece

I get the impression that the cook had some problems with the middle right portion being so much smaller and some burnt skin showing. Otherwise it looks very appetizing.

Score 7. Extremely oversauced !!!! Where' s the meat?

Ed - MCBJ/KCBS

Score 8
Color is good.
Even up placement F to B L to R.
Garnish is appropiate.
Middle two pcs are a bit splotchy.
Size and shape vary... so do chickens
Some judges deduct for that, some don't

Just a suggestion. Trim each thigh uniformly. Smooth out the sauce so coverage is complete on all pieces and sauce is not the 1st thing that draws your attention.

Looks really good, but not quite excellent. Middle piece on the right is too different from the rest - meat (or sauceless skin) showing on the left side and some black on the right side.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: 7
Just does not look appetizing. Shape of chicken looks like no attention was given to make it look good and the sauce is blotcy.

SUGGESTIONS: I would trim the chicken and try to evenly coat the chicken Some judges do judge the garnish, so pay more attention to this.

Mike - Thanks for following the BBQ Critic judging format! I also appreciate you keeping your GARNISH suggestions separate from your scoring reasons.

Nice job!

The chicken pieces are very un-uniformed. Bottom left and middle left are good sizes but no other pieces match them or each other. The piece in middle right just looks pitiful. Also sauce looks uneven on them and some of them look to have to much sauce.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
