7 looks dry, over cooked overall not appetizing to my eye

Suggestion: select pieces for uniform size, to my eye the garnish overwhelms the product, sauce more evenly.

Uneven sauce. Skin has the wrinkled look that means it will all come off with the first bite. We are fortunate enough to judge some amazing looking chicken at KCBS events and this just doesn't have it. Could be 8 in person or low as six but a 7 here.

One suggestion: Too much garnish especially in front and back. It's starting to cover up the chicken

SCORE/REASONS....6...just don't want to grasp a piece.

Not meat I'd want to bite in to. Burned comes to mind. Also, garnish doesnt get factored in UNTIL it prevents you from seeing the meat. The view of the meat is incumbered by too much greenery.

This one hurts me. I want to give you a 9 because you are so close. I think the biggest thing to me is different size chicken. The 2nd and 4th one (left to right) on top look really small. The first 1st one (left to right) on bottom looks like a whopper. With that whopper and the 2nd piece that is small on the top row, that is where my eyes focus on. Also looks like you may have put sauce on tid bit to early and it has carmelized to much but could be pic so I am not going to take off for that.

Suggestions/Comments: I have to say the color and freshness of your garnish looks great. It really brings out great color in the meat. What really concerns me is how the chicken sinks in the middle and you have not even transported the meat yet. I feel that once it did make it to the judges table it was sitting under the garnish. Work on building the bed up in the middle so we can see how great your meat is. Do those things and I will give it a 9.

six--looks charred with an uneven coloring and size

garnish--use some to raise the product so it frames the meat rather then overhang

7-Varying size pieces, gob of liquid on piece top row second from left.

BBQ Critic? : I did have to subtract from the score because GARNISH in my opinion was hiding part of the chicken. Say for instance what if the garnish was covering a 1/3 of the meat? would we be able to count it against them?

BBQ Critic

Noel - yes. If the garnish is covering the meat, we cannot judge it completely so you do have every right to count off if you feel it is interfering with the judging process.

Cook - please be mindful NOT to cover up your meat with garnish. As you all can see by reading the comments on this box, - many judges have scored down this box because GARNISH is preventing them from judging the MEAT. Not good.

Skin is very wrinkled, thighs are almost lost in the garnish, trim is uneven. Not very appetising.

Skin looks burnt.

While the chicken does look good, the sauce is too lumpy and non-uniform as well as the chicken has been cooked to dark for a top score.

7. The color doesn't appeal to me, but it may just be the picture. Sauce doesn't look evenly applied. Meat is hidden by the garnish.

5 - Just doesn't look good. My first thought was Chinese food. Top right looks like an eggroll.

Too much garnish can hide the item being judged.

Dick - CBJ

Score 7. Chicken is too dark and doesn't look appetizing. I believe it may be in the cooks bbq sauce which may have a lot of sugar and will burn easy, but the cook will have to figure this out.

Score = 6
Reason = appears charred and fairly un-appetizing.
Suggestion = meat should sit on top of the garnish instead of almost buried in it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
