This box just looks fantastic to me. Wings AND thighs!
Maybe like to see a little more browning
Wow, I can't wait for my first event this season.
Had wings in one event before and I think every judge at my table gave straight 9's

8-there are a few goobers that could have been picked off.
There are varying size and small pieces but it doesn't seem to bother me as much due to the fullness, placement and color and shine of the meat. The meat looks very appealing to me.

Would judge this box a 9. Meat looks very appetizing.

I really like this layout, the way the skin looks and the amount of chicken provided for sampling.

Appears to be thighs and flappers. Looks very appetizing.

Wow. Pretty box. Love the uniformity of color. In this case, putting all those extra pieces worked but more often than not, extra pieces can drop your score. Be careful. Congrats on some great looking chicken.

Um, no score? I assume this a 9 for you. ;-)

s/r, NINE, this the best chicken box i have seen for a long time, i
have never judged a box w/ wings in it.

7 Varying sizes, some spots look dry.

KevB KCBS CBJ

Score: 8

The wings look like different sizes. Some of the thighs in the back look like different sizes as well. Sauce looks uneven on wings compared to thighs. Not sure if I like how you placed those 2 wings in upward position (think you placed them this way because you were going to run out of room). My eyes keep focusing on that part of the box and not all of the meat as a whole.

Comments: I love that you are giving the judges a choice of wings and thighs and not just wings or thighs. As a judge I will grab me a piece of both.

SCORE/REASONS...9, if I stare at the box you get an 8, but as most judges know, we may take 1-2 seconds to score appearance. color looks a little washed out on the breasts.

COMMENTS...when putting two different products in a box, if one is not a nine, you can't get a nine from the box...just a thought!

9 - without a doubt, one of the better chicken boxes that I've seen. Great color and I like seeing more than just thighs.

Very good looking box. Would have been a 9 if chicken skin had a little more color , other than just the sauce. Have never seen a 12 piece chicken turn in box before, but very attractive layout.

8 maybe a 9 if seen in person, front pieces look lighter than those in the back, could be lighter rub or sauce. Overall pretty good

I looked at this along time.
7
I dont know what part of the chicken those front 6 are from?
The yellow color is a negative for me.
I think a darker red color and non yellow skin would be better.

9 - Excellent

I have some concerns about the glaze on the wings being lighter than that on the thighs, but not enough to mark it down.

overall trim is well done except size variation. Box looks a bit crowded to me

9--looks like white and dark meats-hope it tastes as good as it looks

Kendall - CBJ

I'd give it a 7. Maybe it's the picture but they seem awfully orange to me. Also, (I can't believe I'm saying this) there are too many pieces of meat in the box. Pick either the big pieces or the smaller pieces, but not both.

Larry (CBJ)

9!!! That looks very good. I can see the effort in this presentation.
Lower right is missing sauce on a small spot.

Wing and thigh for each judge. That's unique!

Keith - CBJ/KCBS

I would score this box a 9 as I don't know what could be improved. Good looking largely uniform pieces that don't appear to be over-sauced. I would be looking forward to sampling this chicken.

I also like the idea of sampling two different pieces of chicken -- give the appearance the cook has confidence in his meat.

Although I have some doubts about it be barbecue chicken, the chicken does look VERY appetizing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
