Solid 8, apealing to the eye, good alignment (box placement). I'd want to see more of the meat to give it a 9.

I'd score this a 7 (Above Average)

IF the meat was presented better then it easily could have gotten an 8 and maybe even a 9.

I am not overly concerned about each breast being of different size. The color and sauce look good, get the solid seven and are set up to be much better.

My issue is the meat looks dropped in the box as if it was what was left of a really great box of meat.

Not judging the garnish but suggesting that a better use of garnish might have raised and bordered the meat in such a way as to make the box look more full and bring the overall appearance of the meat to seem robust as opposed to leftover.

I could easily see the same meat scoring higher. Maybe even a third breast.

I have never seen chicken looking quite like this in my limited judging experience but it sure looks good. Have had breast once before and it was dry. This looks delectable. Good color, great cuts.
closest piece of the left breast is off line just a tad but this is a great looking box. Kudos

Looks good. Would love to taste it.

9. Looks great, done enough but not overdone. Great color, looks juicy and tender.

Comment: Not the same old thigh. Would love to see this box at the Sam's finals this fall.

Not perfect but does look like chicken I'd want to eat. Frankly we've become accustomed to chicken with more reddish tone, that might've helped. The sauce is just a tad gloppy, hence the 8. I'm curious about what I'm about to taste (were we actually seeing this in person). There appears to be no smoke whatsoever, and while we cannot judge the smoke ring in appearance, barbecue meat should have some smoke flavor in/on it. Also I'm going to be curious about the tenderness of the meat. There's a VERY narrow window of tenderness on a chicken breast.

I'm curious how this scored all around, appearance as well as tenderness and taste.

8== I like everything but would have liked see both breasts closer to equal in size

9 - This looks VERY appetizing

Advice for a competition: Not a common presentation, which will probably lower scores. I'd also question the "6 equal portions" as there are only 4 of the end pieces that some judges may prefer

9 - Looks really good!! I rarely see breast meat presented.

Kendall - CBJ

I'd give it a 9. The meat looks moist and the presentation is well done.

A solid 8 from this judge. Beautiful color, it looks moist, and it begs me to eat it. If it weren't for the odd-shaped pieces and some imperfections in the sauce layer I would have given it a 9.

8. The only thing that's holding back from a 9 is that the sauce looks a little gloppy. Thin it out just a little, and it's a 9. Nice color on the skin, and I loves me some breast.

Very interesting approach. Appetizing. 2 suggestion . if possible line the slices up so that the is a continuous line top to bottom. Piece on the right, bottom slice shifts to the right, piece on the right , bottom slice shifts to the left. Also be very aware of the frame of your box. This is a picture and picture frames and matting are cut straight. Your frame is a bit jagged.

Score 6. Chicken??? At first glance I couldn't determine what this meat was. No color and the sauce looks like honey, is this really bbq chicken. I think this cook is trying to "get out of the box" and i really afraid they are going to see these drastic changes reflected in their scores. ABSOLETELY NO WOW FACTOR HERE!!!!

Looks like average chicken breast I bake and then sauce in less than an hour in the kitchen. Not to say I'd expect it to taste bad but it doesn't LOOK like it would be anything special. Toss some other trimmings in the box and its a BBQ Chicken Salad from Applebee's.

My only suggestion is to work a different cut. Boneless-skinless breast does not really lend itself well to competition barbecue IMO.

Looks more like chicken you would find at the "Oriental Wok". Appetizing, but it just doesn't say BBQ. Would like to see more color from wood smoke.

Outside the box (so to speak) here. It looks very appetizing but...
- the saucing is inconsistent
- the shape is odd (the top piece looks like a loaf of french bread while the bottom looks like a large Nemo)

Despite looking tasty, I scored down based on these points just as I would when judging dark meat.

9. Even though they are different sizes, and it looks like some sauce didn't get on side of the right piece at the top, the meat looks really good.

Nice. Love the setup. Would have given 9 but back right 2 pieces and don't match others and my eyes keep focusing on that.

SCORE/REASONS....Solid 8....I just want a piece,don't care about color,sauce,etc...let's eat!...IMO, that's what appearance score should stand for.

COMMENTS...While I'm not here to judge garnish,it is an optional for you to use or not, since you chose to use, it should not detract from the appearance of the meat and your's is border line,oh well!

I would give this an 8; it looks beautiful, great color, but I would strive to make the pieces in the box more uniform in size, make them closer to the same size.

cbj/comp cook.I give it an 8,I know your not suppose to judge on the garnish, but if it's in there it adds to the whole effect. It's nice to see something other than thighs or legs.

Score 7
Needs uniform color and sauce is not smooth, needs more color. It would be better to have two pieces of chicken that were the same size.

Not a certified judge, but the meat looks tasty, but looks like it was done pretty fast and easy. I do give much credit for doing breast, that does take some guts. I do prefer a darker color and more of a "BBQ" appearance. This almost looks baked with some sauce and that chicken came from the frozen food section. The sheen is nice and balanced for what is being shown.
I would give it a 5 maybe a 6.

Steph Franklin (cook)

7 I like the gutsy thought behind this box. Meat needs to sit higher in the box. And play around with different angles and the uniformity of the pieces.

Bill KCBS CBJ
1/30/2012 07:01:40 am

Wow. Tough one. 6 maybe 7. Looks very good but based on trying to be "uniform" or matching pieces, this is not. I would think who got the end peices would have a differing tenderness as well verus center cut.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
