Score = 9

This box is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Click on the photo so you can see the larger version and you'll want to bite your screen!

I erally, really wish for a way to do taste/texture online, too. :-(

Nice box!

Score: 9

I love the look overall. Great color on the thighs and beautiful grill marks/color. The only thing I'm sure someone will gripe about is that the glaze is a bit uneven across the various pieces, but as part of the overall perspective I can't see it impacting enough to lose a point; not in the big picture.

Oh, and don't click on the box like Herb said. I did and banged my head on the screen. :-)

I gotta go with a 9, too.

If i were to be extremely picky, the front right thigh is oddly shaped and smaller than the rest and the middle left thigh has a dark spot on it's lower right corner. Also, the center right thigh doesn't appear to have sauce on the right end, but that may be the picture.

BUT... I probably wouldn't have seen any of those at the table.

The box looks beautiful, but since six thighs normally take up a whole box, I can't help but wonder if these are half-thighs or from a game hen.

I would give it an 8. The breast doesnt look appealing to me.

great looking box.... I wonder taste wise how dry that center piece would be by the time the judges taste it? Great appearance however. 9 from me, for sure. Cbj and cook

great job...well done a strong 9
looks good enough to eat!! had to be deboned thighs
to get them to look like that...

Big blank spaces around the thighs, the chicken breast doesn't match color-wise with the sauced dark meat, breast doesn't look juicy, and either it's a bad pic or there's a spot of sauce on the right side of the box edge. Not a 9, perhaps a 7 on a good day (and most judges we've talked to recognize that breast is harder to cook, but they won't score up for cooking it).

On appearance of the meat - a 9. Uniformly sized and shaped thighs presented evenly in the box. The meat looks moist and tasty. The breast in the center with the faint grill marks is a positive addition to the overall appearance. I second the comment that I don't like parsely sticking to the meat when you pick it up, but at this point, judging the appearnce of the meat only, it doesn't distract me.

CBJ & BBQ Chef,

Overall: 9

Beautiful box, breast would worry me in some cases, but this is NOTHING BUT APPEARANCE. the only critic I can give is the front right thigh is smaller than the others.

Appearance: 8

On the breast meat the grill marks aren't wonderfully appetizing, but all in all not bad. Also there's a little bit of an elf ear thing going on; perhaps remove the tip piece...

I love the look overall, the front right thigh is round shape bit smaller kind out of place. The breast to me looks a we bit dry maybe just photo is that a drop of sauce glaze on the edge of the box and as one fellow put it the elf ear at the top of the breast kinda bugs me. All in All i like it.

Not a Judge

This looks amazing. Love the layout of the box. I am not a hige fan of Chicken Breast and my tongue is beating itself to death over this one. The Thighs look great. the only complaunt anyone could have is that the one thigh on the lower right is a tad bit small.
My rating is a 9

Wow, this is why they say do not take a chance with breasts. I'd give It a 7 and here is why. That breast looks wrong. It looks off color and dry. I have no doubt that the cook had the best of intentions and I would love to know what the actual scores were.

I could see this one from across the table. This looks delicious. A great display. I applaud the pitmaster on the breast- knowing that some judges will take points away expecting dry meat. To all cooks- take MORE risks like this! 9 all day- every day.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
