7--sauce looks gloppy--hopefully was smoothed b4 shutting the box--then maybe 8

I'd give it an 8. Everything looks great except the sauce looks to thickly applied.

7 - Top center thigh is kind of wrinkled and the sauce is not evenly spread on the meat! Plus, I'm not sure what the lobster-looking object in the middle is but it isn't even centered.

Nice box. A little more even distribution with the sauce would give this a 9.

Love the dual presentation. Nice arrangement. Good dark color.

However, Brush marks on the thighs detract from appearance. A little spritz after saucing might help that. Sauce might be a touch thick.

I'd like to see KCBC require both dark and white meat be presented.

5--Thighs look too dark and the sauce is goopy and looks like it was spread with a rake. The I (assume) breast looks horrible. Burnt and the skin looks very loose and not bite through. The placement of the breast also makes the box non symmetrical as it is not able to properly fit between the thighs.

Score: 8
The only reason this didn't make a '9' is that the meat is oversauced-looks rather gloppy. Color is nice and it looks tasty.

NOT a fan. Looks like you were trying to design something like on those Cake shows on Food Network. When I look at this it looks like a BBQ Rolly Polly with legs. Be careful this could be a DQ. Also top row of thighs do not match bottom row in size.

Suggestion: You need to cut WAY back on the sauce. I do like the idea you gave me a thigh and boneless breat option. I think you should center the breast to be in the middle. Also need to use the same size thighs. Top row is different in size than bottom row which makes the bottom row look choked out. Fix those things and I would give you a solid 8.

I like the color on the sauce, but it's applied really unevenly and gloppy, plus the brush marks on the thighs (those are thighs, yes?) take away from the appeal. It appears that the chicken skin burned in a few places, but that could be the picture or just really thick sauce...

s/r,8/9, may be over sauced a little for my eye, but i would look forward to judging this turn in.

Interesting box, I like seeing something different, but not sure this is it. The thighs do not fit the box with the breast, uneven, too much sauce, score 6

Not appetizing due to the skin, wrinkly . The center section of meat is distracting. If center section were "centered" and upper right thigh better placed that may improve the overall look of the box.

8 Brush marks everywhere and too much sauce

Keith - CBJ/KCBS

I'm gonna say 8 although an enlarged pic would be nice. When I click on it I actually get a SMALLER shot of this chicken.

I like the presentation of two styles. The pieces are nicely placed. It looks very good, very tasty.

If I were to offer suggestions they'd include perhaps going a little lighter on the sauce. It almost appears as if there are brush strokes on some of those pieces (shouldn't be a problem but it is odd).

Finally, the thighs appear a little dark although I wouldn't count off for this here as it could be an effect of the photo.

Score 6. This chicken is soooo oversauce, with a very thick sauce being PAINTED on I can't even see the meat. The box arrangement doesn't help either. I could easily pass on a box that looks like this if that were possible. No WOW factor what-so ever!!

6 or 7
Too much sauce and sloppily applied. The bottom 3 thighs do look tasty though

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score 8 - I'd have given a 9 if there wasn't so much sauce on the breast pieces. Color, size, and placement of the thighs are excellent. Nice looking box.

Chicken looks great, little too much sauce on thighs.
Not sure if this is sculpting would have to ask TC
Pour the sauce on don't brush it.

8 before the TC gives answer

6. Average. Sauce uneven. Brush marks visible in the sauce.

Tip - Try taking the picture from the front of the box like the judges will see it.

I hate to do it but this is a 7 tops. The pieces on the top row and way smaller than the bottom row...also, this is the pure definition of over-saucing. The brush marks are very obvious. on the plus side this is a really nice layout.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
