8, I was leaning towards 7, but because the lighting was a little dark, I went with an 8. Personally, as far as garnish goes, I would have tried to fill in the gaps as much as possible around the sides and maybe a little more filler in the bottom of the box, to make those thighs pop out a litttle more.

6 - Too dark, irregular shapes, and not centered in the box.

Looks like chicken but not shaped like chicken. I like the color. I like the look of the skin. The grid is not centered so its and 8 (very good)

Score: 7

No WOW factor. Chicken looks dull. Not all the same size. Not center in box. Appears to be more to the left than the right.

score = 7
meat doesn't look appealing and with some light and dark spots, not uniformed, and several different sized pieces.

Looks average to me. Image seems dark but not so much that it can be blamed for the overcooked appearance of this chicken. This is usually a favorite category for me as almost all entries are at least very good and this one may be -- but the appearance leaves something to be desired.

If I were to offer suggestions they might include pulling the chicken just a bit earlier (skin doesn't have to be crunchy) and paying closer attention to getting the pieces centered in the box.

5 possibly 6

For chicken, there's just nothing particularly appetizing about this entry, so as I type this I'm definitely thinking 5. They look more like 9 small taters that need washing, some of them need it badly.

I know there has been a push to make small round little chicken balls of love the last few years. The only ones I've seen make that work a little were the ones who dipped the chicken balls at the end in shiny red sauce. To me those were over-sauced IMHO. This one doesn't come there. You might do better, again IMHO, with chicken that looks like chicken. Trimmed, but un-sculpted neatly presented thighs (I'm assuming those are thighs) will do better, even if they are this brown.

6. Not a fan of balls of chicken. Looks like it has a dull appearance, it doesn't make me want to jump in there and fight for a piece. The whole group of chicken isn't centered in the box, it is all to the left and top leaving noticeably wide margins of greenery to the right and bottom. Some skin is browner that others.

Suggestion - Your garnish looks terrible. I wasn't sure if those were florettes of broccoli or parsley. Stems are everywhere. If your garnish looks ragged and thrown in there, it's going to drag the entire appearance of your box down.

cbj/comp cook, 7 possible 8 in person,I'd like to see a little more sheen on the meat myself.I know were ot suppose to judge the garnish but if it's in there it should look neat, this looks a little rushed to me,and the pieces could be centered in the box a little better.I'm not trying to be over critical here, but as a cook myself this is the kind of feedback I'd like to hear myself.

Score: 7 - Chicken pieces are pretty uniform and set well in the box but they look overdone to me. A couple pieces look scorched and shrunken.

Nice looking chicken. The pic color is a bit off but the pieces look good. I'm a little drawn to the difference in size between the front row versus the back row. Might have gotten to a 9 but the meat placement is way off center.

Looks like chicken (that's a GOOD thing), but looks like the garnish might consume it before I get a piece! Definitely off-centered, some pieces look almost charred. I don't mind not having LOTS of sauce and syrup coating the chicken, but this does look a bit dry without any sauce at all.

Tough picture to judge from as it is dark and from the back of the box.
Chicken appears nice and not overly sauced if sauced at all.
7. Maybe 8 in person.

Centering may help as well, but I didn't downgrade for that.

8 - It's a bit dark although I'm not sure how much of that is due to shadows. I'd take out the top left & right pieces, and the bottom middle. The box also looks a little off center to me (shifted to the left). Although there are a couple blemishes, it looks tasty.

8 would be on my score card. It was my first impression. I think a little more care with alignment and angle of placement and perhaps an even color throughout the pieces may have increased the eye appeal of this box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
