1-----9) Meat shall not be sculptured, branded or presented in a
way to make it identifiable. Rosettes of meat slices are not
allowed. Violations of this rule will be scored a one (1) on all
criteria by all six judges.

Noel - I don't think this is what you would call "rosettes." However, I guess you could make an argument this box is sculpted since it does seem to present a design. I think it would probably pass as a legitimate entry, though. :-)

Myron Mixon would be proud. :)

Box is a 9.

Kinda looks unnatural doesn't it? :) Cupcake Chicken.

Yep! Myron would love this one. ;-)

7 They look oversauced to me and not like any part of the chicken I am familiar with although its a nice presentation that pleases the eye. I don't find it particularly appetizing and it doesn't make me want to take a bite

9 perfect shape, color and glaze.

eight

this box is a perfect example of what I think is the bastardization of comp chicken--while this box has nice color, great sheen, nice layout it in no way even looks like chicken--

BBQ Critic

Buzz - I am surprised to see an 8 from you (expecting something lower since you perceive this as "fake looking chicken." Appreciate your honest evaluation and scoring this entry fairly from your point of view

Nice job! :-)

7, maybe an 8. Above average chicken box.

Score 8 I rarely like muffin chicken, but I would like to taste these. Also appreciate having a sample for the table captain and volunteers.

Not a fan of the perfect sphere - it makes me think of McNuggets. The color and the sauce look good though.

I'm wondering if this could be considered sculpting

6 - Can't see the meat because the glaze is too thick. Not that appealing to me.

6 not real appearing. Look more like meatballs

BasicPatrick (KCBS cook & cbj)

Here we have the current chicken debate captured in one obviously talented cook's presentation.

This a great looking box of current competition chicken. The sauce is set well, the shaping is consistent, the presentation is made with care, and the color is right.

However I must score this box low as it does not look like chicken and this is not a stunt cooking contest and as a judge I want to see the highest quality BBQ. It probably tastes great but I'm going to feel dirty eating it.

This is a real dilemma. I can see another judge giving this a 9 and I could't blame he or she. I could also see a judge giving this box a 5.

I'm going to split the difference and award a 7.

Wife and both think this is just wrong looking!
However they are so perfectly matched and the glaze is flawless I will give it that.
I need more natural looking food.

Very nice, look to border patrol. A small bit of attention will provide a 9.

9-Nice color and presentation. Chicken is almost to perfect.

Hance - MIM/MBN/GBA CBJ and comp cook

7-8, so I guess would score an 8

On the good side, discounting that the pic is fairly dark, I think there's a nice color on the chicken (this IS chicken, isn't it?). The arrangement is simple and clean and not distracting and presented well. The sauce has a nice natural shine, not bland and not appearing artificially shiny.

On the not-so-great side is that I'm not a particular fan of the "little red balls of luv" because they dont look like food, much less a particular type of food. The sauce may be a tad heavy, but nice color.

Pondering to myself: how do you score something that obviously was presented with care and very clean, but honestly it doesn't trigger anything that says "you must eat this" because it doesnt particularly look like food..

BBQ Critic
4/16/2012 08:52:38 pm

Hance - Knowing your view on trimmed chicken and how you think some chicken doesn't look like chicken (or food), I expected to see a 6 from you. I am extremely impressed on how fairly you judged this box. Nice job.

I'd give this box a 9, but we are darn close on this one. Again, appreciate your honest and fair evaluation on this box, Hance. :-)

Does not have the WOW factor of a 9 but is a good solid box. Looks little over sauced.

May be the lighting but looks very dark but arrangement is nice would go a 7..

I'd give them a 7. The look a little over sauced, and the shape of them just doesn't look natural.

A buddy of mine that cooks told me that the new "thing" was doing chicken in muffin pans. I'm guessing this is it. Certainly does not look like chicken but I'd sure like to eat it. Amazing color
I can't wait to see all the comments on this box

Great Balls O' Chicken!!! One could almost DQ this box for sculpting, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt. The meat (I think it is meat) is highly oversauced as well. Just not appealling. I have to say that I have never seen chicken look like sauce-painted billiard balls before. The cook might want to re-think that in the future.
On the plus side though, the layout of the box is nice and the background garnish is very fresh looking so there is good contrast for the meat.

I would give it a 9 but I would check with the rep first to make sure that it wasn't a marked box. They looked sculpted to me.

7 - I'm sorry, but chicken shaped like that with that much sauce just doesn't look appetizing to me. From the top view, it almost looks like sauced up meatballs. I'm just not a big fan of chicken that doesn't look like chicken.

The original scores on this box in a live competition are as follows:

8,6,9,8,9,8

SUGGESTIONS TO COOKS: Cooks might approach this type of box with caution. As we can see, the scores are all over the place because of various views on "trimmed" and "shaped" chicken.

SUGGESTIONS TO JUDGES: Try be as fair as possible judging chicken that is trimmed or not trimmed. Each style should be worthy of high scores based on how it is presented by the cook. I can see how this box would not look like the chicken you might see in your backyard. Then again, this is not a backyard contest.

Some judges find this style "appetizing" because they have taken a bite from chicken that looks like this with a 9 in taste. That experience can create a lasting memory. That said, if you've tasted chicken that looks like this and it tasted awesome, you might try asking yourself this question before you write down your score:

How could this not look appetizing?

To each his own, but something to ponder. ;-)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
