7 A couple of pieces look burnt and the brush marks make a couple look wrinkly

7 Too dark, over sauced

Too much sloppily applied sauce. It might taste good. This might be overdone. Could probably tell in person. Could be a 6

7-- dark , brush strokes, bone sticking out front piece

Looks a bit sloppy but still pretty chicken.

The lighting really shows those brush strokes and makes the skin look tough and leather like. The dark spots dont help out this perception.

Brush marks on blochey sauce. Bottom left piece should have been trimmed of the piece sticking out. Sloppy garnish takes away from the appearance of the meat. Garnish isn't judged but if you are going to use it, arrange it to your advantage. 6

Brush lines turn me off

8. Would prefer to see the skin a bit lighter. Doesn't make me want to tear into the box too quickly.

I know the pic is dark, but the chicken appears to be VERY dark too... Brush marks aren't very appetizing IMHO. Also, please dont put garnish where it incumbers the view of the meat...

I would dip the chicken in sauce and not brush it on. Appears it was brushed on heavy and made the chicken look wavey
score 7

Score 6. No appeal. Is blackened chicken a new catagory?

6
quite dark, the chicken is being partially covered by the garnish in the middle. I can't remember seeing 2 different types of garnish in the same box before, of course I am not judging garnish, just the overall appearance of the box. Clean the sauce off the box before presentation.

I would score the box an 7

Hard to tell if the lines are from the sauce or from the skin, but it throws off the appeal of the meat a little. Some light and dark spots on the meat and loose the bush in the center of the box.

I'll give this one a 7. Meat looks overly-sauced, do not like the parsley added at center on top of the chicken, also some juice on right side of container.

6. Lots of brush marks, Some of the pieces look like they got pretty dark - like black dark. Sticking that parsley in between in the middle does not enhance the appearance of the meat.

Larry CBJ/KCBS/GBA

7 - Oversauced, brush strokes, garnish covers-up some meat, and clean the sides of the box.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 7 - pieces are trimmed nicely and placement in the box is uniform. However, the color on a couple of pieces looks dark and the skin looks drawn which leads me to think it's a bit over cooked.

6 sauce is pasty looking--- color is too dark

Color isn't appetizing to me at all. Too dark and looks rather burnt in places.
Having the parsley garnish on top of the meat is distracting and takes away from the meat visually.

8- It has some problems but not enough to take away from the total score. Some of the meat looks like it has burnt spots. Color is good but the green appears to hide some of it. Remember there is no need to dress up pretty meat with lettuce!

Good sizing, fairly uniform pieces, looks appetizing. Might be a little dark.

Brush marks on the sauce...maybe a spritz of AJ would help? Judges are supposed to eat the thighs not the garnish...make the chicken sit on top.

cbj/comp cook, 7 it looks like the meats a little overdone to me and it could just be the pic, also the row of parsley down the center is distracting from the meat.I know we are to judge the meat only but if the garnish is in there it's gonna effect the overall appearance of the box.

    NAME FIELD ON FORM:

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
