8 It doesn't look like bbq - it has the color of something I'd see on a Chinese buffet. Other than that though - they look good

This looks awfull. Like steamed bags of gelatin.
Is the garnish legal? Is it Kale or Romaine?

7-- chicken looks tasty but way to many different shapes-round, oblong, polygon shapes. I would suggest maybe cooking more pieces to give yourself a bigger pool of pieces to choose from so the shapes may be alike.

This looks like something you would order at McDonalds

6 Not sure what to think!! Looks like a chinese sweet and sour take out box!

Score 5 Nothing makes me want to try these pieces. If sauce has a smell that lures me in these might be scored higher.

Beautiful Chicken. Shame the green overwhelms the presentation.
Once the box is closed, and then reopened for judging, would that green look what's the green going to look like/

6 you stumped me. at first looked fried? Then I imagine some new flavor of lemon chicken. yummy. Large variation in the texture wont let me mentally think they are done no matter if I look at the left front crinkle one of center smooth one. I think scores will be all over the place.

KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK
Off color. Skin looks wrinkled and rubbery. Top left piece should have been trimmed to match the others. Not sure if the big green leaf sticking up in the back is legal garnish. 6

These don't looks BBQ'd, they look baked or even parboiled.

I had to triple check to see that this was a chicken entry. Having to check isn't good, because it means that I have no idea what this is, and if I have no idea what this is, it's tough to say that it's appetizing at all, because it could be shiny mounds of goo... Sorry, I'm just not interested really. The almost look like they might be chinese dumplings.

9. I am assuming these thighs are boneless which is fine with me. They almost look "candied" but look good enough to want to try one. Was teetering on an 8 because I prefer to see thighs look like thighs but that is just me.

Score 7. What is it? Honey chicken? No appeal for me to this chicken what-so-ever. It might have even rated a six.

6
unappetizing due to color of the chicken. Also I have a hard time thinking that this box could be used in competition, how do you close the lid with so much green sticking out?
If the color is a photo thing then my other comment would be that I would like to see the skin on all the pieces look like the center front piece and right back.

I give the box a 7

Hard to tell, but the chicken looks like Chinese "orange chicken" by the color. Pieces are not proportional and seem untrimmed on the ends.

7. Garnish is too much for me. Don't see how they close the top or keep the back leaf from folding over on top of the chicken. Chicken doesn't look appetizing to me, too honey colored and too much sauce. Chicken pieces almost ball-shaped, which I don't like.

7...the color is just not appealing to me

Smitty - KCBS CBJ

5. Orange glazed boiled bull testicles is what I first thought. That isn't what you want a judge to think of your chicken.

1 - DQ. Improper garnish (turnip or collard or flat leaf kale).

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ
5/3/2012 11:05:13 am

Score: 9 - While the pieces are small, they are well trimmed, have a good color, and are uniformly placed in the box. The glaze adds a nice shine that makes me want to grab a piece to eat.

The color doesn't look particularly appetizing to me. Looks too syrupy too.

6- The meat looks shriviled up and it doesn't have any appearance of smoke or coloring due to the cooking process. I would defanitely like to know what this smells like. The score is because it just doesn't make me want to sample it.

Saucing is even. Sizing is OK. Could be the pictures but reminds me of orange chicken at an Asian restaurant. Skin is wrinkled and don't like the orange color. Might taste phenomenal though.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
