Score 9. Not the usual pork entry, but looks great. Can I just keep the whole box?

Where's the Meat? Little or no bark on the left row of meat. Sloppy sauce. Empty box. 6 is a gift. Probably a 5

7--sauce is gloppy--not enuf product

When eating pork I love the money muscle, however, your box would improve with more content and more uniform saucing. A bit gloppy

Score 8 I would like more of the meat from the remaining butt, maybe pulled. Good money muscle.

5 Yikes, that's a mess.

8 - nice looking box. I've never seen a turn-in box look like that. The ones I've seen always have had pulled, chopped or minced along with it.

Although I have nothing against boxes that have only one type of pork in it this one seems like it was hurried and thrown in at the last second. The glaze is uneven and blotchy. This is one of the big things that kills appearance score beyond everything else from my experience and conversations with other judges. The pieces aren't even with each other in the box either. It doesn't take that much time to put them either in order from largest to smallest or at least make even one of the sides down the column.

7 - Tough box to judge! This MM sure must taste fantastic because you seem to have sacrificed appearance scores in favor of taste and tenderness. By this I mean the box does not look overly impressive, yet I can't wait to taste it! It looks empty since the medallions are so small, was the rest of the butt so bad that you didn't want to put it in? It looks unevenly and over-sauced, especially the second slice from the top on the left and the top slice on the right. Futhermore, the cuts are not perfect, which for MM I think is one of the most important things, especially the top and bottom slices on the right. Finally, it appears that the slices were mixed up, since there is a significant color change on the edges in the set on the left and sudden size changes on the slices on the right.

8 - Spotty sauce. That's a sparce box....but is allowed...

OK looking pork box. Meat looks a little lonely in the box. The sauce also looks a little uneven. The pork does look tasty though. I'd give this box an 8.

7. No real WOW factor here. Cut up the money mucsle and stick it in a box.

Score: 8 - Slices look juicy and the bark on most of the pieces looks good. However, there is just a bit too much sauce on the pieces for me to give a 9.

Score: 8
While the meat looks properly cooked and is well presented, the sauce being glopped on (especially on the upper left pieces) detracts from the overall appearance of this box. If the cook had taken just a little more care...

LOTS of things wrong with this entry - but it still looks kinda good. First, the most obvious - looks like 6 chunks with bark and 4 without. Not a DQ, but I sure want to be judge 1-4 and not 5-6. Visually, this is VERY distracting and brings down a better score.
Second, too much sauce - rather gloopy - especially on next to top chunk on left! Spread sauce evenly if you feel you must use it!

Strange presentation, just money muscle. Stuff on the right all looks good. Globby sauce on 2nd from top on the left

Frank CBJ

6. Not a fan of the clumpy sauce on sliced pork. This could be a 9 if the slices were moistened rather than saucing with a heavy hand. A more uniform presentation of the meat would garner better scores from the judges.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
