8 - Meat look moist and color is good. It is sitting down in the garnish a bit. When I compete I use curly parsley packed tight so the meat sits on top.

Way oversauced. Pork is about pork not sauce with a bit of meat. When I see pork sauced to this point it makes me wonder if it's dry or somehow otherwise not cooked properly and gives me pause before I write down my appearance score. As far as placement and presentation overall it is well placed and if it wasn't sauced so heavily it would be a 9.

That's a solid 9. It looks so good that I'm already ready to give the stink-eye to the judge next to me if they take 2 of those chunks.

Nice bark. the meat looks moist. A better presentation may be to place the meat on a bed a lettuce to set it higher in the box and spread the M/M......8

9. Good color, not too sauced I'm looking forward to another bite. Garnish a bit too prominent, but it's a meat contest.

Good looking pork box. The chunks in front have a great color and look very moist. The slices in the back can hardly be seen though as they are nestled down. From what I can see they look great as well. Because I can't get a good look at all the meat I'd give this box an 8. If I could see the slices better this box would probably be a 9.

WHERE"S THE BEEF?? er PORK??
Meat looks great,but it's buried in fluffy,sauce stained greenery.
The entire picture is not "above average" hence a 6.

I love to see the "meat" and not just the top of the meat so maybe consider fanning out the slices at the top.

7 - Too much green and not enough meat. Meat looks a bit wet and doesn't appear to have a nice bark.

Score 8. Excellent looking pork. Note to the cook: Do not use the garnish to hide your entry. This is the reason this box did not get a nine.

Very nice box layout. Might be just a little heavy on the garnish (hiding the meat somewhat), but I didn't score down because it could have just been the angle of the photo too.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
