This is my kind of box! I like the color, good bark and very little sauce. I love to judge the taste of the meat!!! 9

6 Looks dry and over cooked. Not looking forward to tasting.

8 overall box looks great but the money muscle looks a little dry. something to give it a little shine would have helped get this box to a 9 for me

8. Another blurry picture. I hope all of the cuts are equally tasty, tender and moist. The small chunks appear as though they could be tough and dry compared to the rest. If you're not confident each cut is equal, only include your best. Otherwise we will average the scores and you will not score as high as you could.

Great looking pork box. This box is a 9.

8 Generous portions, good arrangement, the photo is a bit off making this tough to judge.

7 - The sliced pieces look like they may be dry and the meat color (this may be the photo- not the meat) is dull and somewhat grey. I wouldn't want to be the judge that wound up with the end piece of the sliced pork(bottom left) - it's usually over seasoned, over sauced, and the meat is usually dryer than the interior slices.

8 - nice looking box of pork, but the MM has a dry appearance to me. But, maybe it's the "soft" character of the pic. Could be a "9" in real life.

Score 9 - Another very good looking box.

8 - The picture quality probably does not do the entry justice.

Everything in a pork box you'd want. Hope I'm first to get at that end piece.
9 here.

9 - I looked but couldn't find anything I thought was wrong with the box.The meat looks like it could be dry, but that could easily be the picture.

Score 8. I would suggest that the team leave out the front slice of the m/m (it is very dark and also hides the better looking center slices) and the back slice ( it appears dry and overcooked) and replace them with more slices of the great looking center pieces.

This is the kind of box that makes me want to be first to pick up at the table so I can steal that end piece! Meat looks good but the box is a bit overstuffed so solid 8

7 - Looks dry and no "pop" to this box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
