7 meat looks dry and not uniform in size.

Score 7. When I first looked at this entry I thought it was kraut & pork. The very finely shredded pork is not appealing and adds no color to the box.

I would ask the table captain to request a ruling from the contest rep. The garnish looks like kale.

Good looking box of pork....could have used more meat with bark on it. I would give it an 8.

John/KCBS

8 Looks appetizing. Good to see bark. Kind of messy.

score=8 alittle above average but not special

Pork looks nice, but photo is blurry. Looks kind of dry though. I'd give this box an 8.

8 Looks good but focus is off, tough one to call.

6 - Just a pile of pork.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
12/26/2012 01:25:28 am

6 - The meat appears to have been tonged into the box without much regard to placement; plus, there appears to be some fatty pieces in the box, though the picture doesn't make it easy to tell for sure.

7 - my impression is a jumbled box of ordinary pork. The "soft" focus of the photo doesn't help.

Some nice bark scattered around. Meat looks moist. Better care should have been taken along the front of the box. Fill in the front corners and push back the piece hanging down in the middle.......8

Just a box of uninspired pulled pork. Nothin bad, nothin great...
Pretty average 6.

six--and because of blurry pic

Paul KCBS/CBJ

6 - Meat looks good however, box looks like it was shakin.

Frank MCBJ

6. Pork looks dry and shredded (rather than pulled) in areas. Shredding can lead to dryness. Blurry picture may make it appear dry. Nice bark.

Score 8 - Pretty good, but lacks a little organization.

7
Looks jumbled and stringy, not too appetizing.

a 6. Looks dry. No apparent plan for arrangement, color etc.

Greg - cbjkcbs

7 - maybe. Pork looks good to eat but it just looks thrown in the box on top of some greens.

jaja

7 overall the meat look good. The presentation has several types of meat (dark mixed with other meat) and can be more uniform. Also, the shape of the presentation can be a little more uniform.

7 the meat appears to be mixed with added sauce, maybe a bit too much. I like the look of the natural meat.

JohnnyY - CBJ/NCBS

8 - Would have loved to have seen more symmetry in this box. If you are going to place a mixture of bark with other pulled pieces be sure there is enough for each judge to sample.

Looks a bit dry, could use a spritz of moisture and maybe a few more pieces with bark 8

8 - looks good but thrown together

8. Meat looks moist and I'm ready to dive in. Perhaps have a neater looking box of meat.

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
